Still searching but just curious if anyone has tried 200 grain partitions in a .308? Seems like it would be a good short range thumper. Nosler doesn’t list this load in their manuals.

Varget and Reloader 15, using magnum primers, should give you close to 2400+fps out of a 22 inch barrel. Maybe 2500fps out of a 24 in bbl.

If your rifle has a 1-12 twist rate, stabilizing that bullet may prove difficult. Try them and see.

A 180 grn bullet will do the job just as well out to 350+yards, with a slightly flatter trajectory and still be a mauler up close as well as you don't have to worry about the bullet losing stability in flight, because it isn't spinning fast enough.

The Speer manual has .308 200 gr data. COAL is listed as either 2.80 or 2.68" and velocities run 2416 fps from a 22" barrel. By comparison, my .308 target rifle which I had chambered with a long throat so I could seat out 210 gr VLDs, produces 2660 fps from a 28" barrel. I think you can get 2350 or slightly better with a Partition, providing you with an effective 250 yard big game load.

Looking at the difference between a 200 grain partition and the 180 grain partition, they are almost the same length. The 200 is blunter with a less tapered olive. These are not boat tailed bullets. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the seating depth will be terribly different. It will be put of a 20 inch barrel with a 1 in 11 twist. For max 100 yard shots, I am thinking the heavier bullet will penetrate more and be a better charging bear stopper, if needed. I’ll take a look at the Speer data. Thanks for the replies!

180, 190, 200, you think 20 gr of bullet is gonna make a measurable difference in stopping some thing at short range. Pass the 12 gauge please

I have the 6th Edition Nosler reloading manual and it doesn't have any 200 grn bullet data for the 308 Win. However http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle does have data for a 200 grn bullet, although its not the 200 partition so you would have to carefully work up a load watching for pressure signs. With that said, the 200 grn load should be able to achieve 2400+fps producing 2558 ft.lbs energy.

I would also recommend that you take a close look at the Nosler partition 180 grn bullet. According to the manual you should be able to achieve 2600+ fps producing 2702 ft.lbs energy, not bad at all. Basically, the 180 grn load has more energy and a flatter trajectory than the 200 grn, so in my opinion it is better suited for the 308 win, and should have excellent terminal performance.

If I were looking for a "short range thumper" load for a 308 Winchester, I would be looking at the 180 Partition
with the protected point. If throat allows, you can seat this out a bit further than the regular Partition, and
I doubt that you would give up any noticeable amount of penetration to the 200 grain bullet. Dave.

Bears are succeptible to shock. Heavier isn't necessarily better for them.

200 can be loaded ok with powders in the 4895 to 4350 speed range.

But, the 180 is a better choice. It delivers about 200 ft lb more energy.

I use 308 with 180 for everything. Does not blow up deer.

Oh brother, the cut and paste guy, Ive seen this statement and others from certain members regurgitated by you as if it was your experience. You speak as a matter of fact with no personal experience, just cut and paste. That being said Whats YOUR real world experience to back up that statement up? Your one dinker black bear??? And curious what animal ISNT susceptible to hydro static shock? Id ask what you think a good speed/wieght is but i can just go see what ardent said, after all thats what your going to do eh?

I have always felt that 200 grain 30 cal bullets were more suitable for
cases with a bit more capacity than the 308 Winchester..
The 30 cal magnums come to mind, but even the 30-06 will drive them
to 2750 or so in a 24" barrel. Dave.
