Smith and Wesson MP9 worth upgrading?

Hey all,

I did a search and didn't see any threads on this topic.

I have an Smith and Wesson MP9. It was my first pistol. It's a few years old, has a few hundred rounds through it. The trigger is pathetic. There is literally a .5 inch of trigger travel. I did some mods and it is way better. I got the pull weight from about 9 (Seriously) down to 3.5-4lbs, and the reset is nice, but I still HATE it.

I also have an SR9, which, for at most a couple hundred bucks more, came with a respectable trigger, nicer finishing, better sights, safety features, etc.

Is the MP9 worth the upgrade? I can put an Apex Flat faced forward sear trigger kit in it for $300. Videos show minimal travel. It would be a dream in comparison.

My dilemma? Do I put a $300 trigger in a $600 gun that is selling used for $600 with the trigger upgrade? Or, do I cut my losses, keep it around for the hell of it and buy something that comes with what I would expect from a reputable manufacturer?

I am happy with what I got for the price I paid for the SR9. The MP9 I feel I'm stuck with a gun I don't like, or I have to put more into it than it's worth to get it to perform its basic function decently. If I do the upgrade will it stand up next to something else I could get, a Shadow, Walther, or Sig, or will I just feel like I put lipstick on a pig?

I know these are used in comps, and some shooters love them. So, it's not a throw away. I guess I am just pissed that the trigger is Sooooo unbelievably bad.

Have you upgraded? What are your thoughts?

I did the trigger and sear kit. I also put a better barrel (can't remember its the one sold in Tennessee near the Dragon for those that ride). Plus Truglo sights. I've spent my life building custom bikes, so I wanted to soup up a pistol. I love my MP9. It's never let me down.

I only put the Apex Sear in mine, good gun, accurate and reliable. Trigger is fine, I'm use to Glocks and DA pistols/revolvers.

I did. It was originally so bad that even expecting it to be a huge pull, a few times I failed to fire not yanking on the thing hard enough. Now it has a decent trigger weight, but it releases right before it reaches full travel. The reset is nice, and it is way more smooth throughout the pull, but the double action first pull is soft, spoungy, and LOOOOONG. I spend more time thinking about how bad it feels than enjoying the shooting, or building my skills.

This is my problem, I always have room for another. I think we all have a want list. Sig and many others are on mine. I don't want to just chuck this one in the corner though, but will I like it enough with a trigger upgrade to not regret that?

1st world problems?

I don't have any confidence in the MP9 if I'm gonna need it, just dunno if I improve, or move on

If you can't figure out the trigger on whatever guns you own, pay more for whatever is "perfect" in the first instance.

Currently, 3 of my closest shooting buddies plus my wife are all running M&P Pro Series with Apex triggers or full Apex kits. One of those buddies is the best competition shooter I know and shoots M&P’s exclusively, and swears by the Apex kit. The M&P can be exactly what you want if you decide to pony up the cash for the Apex kit. The dilemma will always be “ do I want to try something new or drop that cash on a trigger” lol
PS_you are absolutely right about the stock trigger, it flat out sucks

Just do it.

Do I put a $300 trigger in a $600 gun that is selling used for $600 with the trigger upgrade? What are your thoughts?

Once you've done it, you'll be so pleased with it you'll then order a $300. barrel for your $900. gun that is selling used for $600 with the trigger upgrade and then you'll pay someone another $300. just to fit it. Then, you'll be so pleased with it you'll order a new set of sights (~$200.) and Talon Grips (~$100.) for your $1500. gun that is selling used for $600 with the trigger upgrade. Then you'll re-read the rulebook and realize that the ($300.) aftermarket barrel is illegal in Production.

Just do it.

An Apex sear alone makes a substantial difference. The transformation with a full Apex kit is remarkable.

I'm not big on selling. A ####ty gun is still better than no gun, but I think I would be happier with a $300 Norinco at the moment. So, if I don't do the upgrade, I'll likely buy something cheaper to replace this. Then I have two crappy guns. If I do the upgrade, it will make this gun better and it will make my next purchase a better choice, too. Then I have 3 good guns. Maybe only my logic, but I'm gonna run with it.

It just pisses me off it's so bad it's a requirement, not a choice. Oh, well. Thank you guys, I needed the push.

Problem 2. They are hard to find like everything else right now. I'm in the sticks in AB, I have to order online, anyway. Only place in AB I see online has red. I'd prefer black, but not a deal breaker.

Who do you recommend I try?

Oh Ya, which kit? I want the floppy hinge trigger out, for sure. So, not a spring kit. The Flat faced forward sear kit has almost no take up, or over travel. I think it has about 3/16 total travel. I don't care, flat or curved face, but I do want the forward sear action. Is it the same sear throughout the kits, or are the AEK and Duty/carry AEK kits different sears?

Done!

I noticed where Edgy was from. Called Siwash in Chwk. I've dealt with them a few times before. $259.00. It's the best price I've found, so I have the 100-067 forward sear curved black aluminum trigger kit on the way.

I should see it next week. Once I put it in, if I can tolerate the temps, (my digital thermometer isn't even reading in the morning right now. -40 is as low as it goes, and apparently we are beyond that) I will let you guys know how it goes..

I appreciate the feedback. I needed to get over the angry. This was my second gun purchase after a Mossberg 590 Mariner. It never crossed my mind that a gun would come with such a lousy trigger. As my guns, shooting ability and knowledge grew, so did my contempt for this trigger and the gun, which made me not want to put any money into it. I'm excited to see how I feel about the M&P next to the Ruger after this.

Cheers!

It’s worth it if you think it is .
For me , I have several pistols , love the real steel old school guns , but decided to drop my customization bucks into ....a Glock ?!?!
Lol , it’s my only Glock , but I just found it a perfect fit for my hand and figured because aftermarket parts are available so widely , why not a Glock .
Now , with new trigger , barrel , RMSc , and extensive slide and frame mods ( many are strictly aesthetic as I’m a bit of a magpie for purty thangs) it looks awesome . As soon as the deep freeze ends I’m looking forward to a range session and am super pleased with the gun .
Big thanks to BlackBox Customs !
In the end , do the mods to the pistol that you LIKE shooting the most , because that’s the pistol you will be grabbing every time you go shooting and shooting should be enjoyable .
