I want to be able to comfortably shoulder, pump and fire the gun while wearing my pack and/or plate carrier, so the factory 13-7/8 LOP is just a bit of a stretch. I've looked into some factory options, and I like and would use the magpul sga stock (if I could find one), but for the expense, cutting down the existing stock and fitting a QD cup to it would accomplish what I need to do all the same.

SO - if I shave an inch off the butt, that'll leave about 3/8 of the buttpad hanging off the toe of the stock....that will keep me up at night. Guns need to be aesthetically beautiful, not just mechanically beautiful, in this house.

Do any of you have recommendations for the grind-to-fit pads on the market? I don't have the various grinders that I've seen in instructional videos but I might be able to get away with strapping a belt sander down and doing it that way.

Is this worth my while or should I just look for a shorter LOP stock such as the magpul?

I just ordered my magpul sga from brownells, price worked out to similar Canadian pricing..... I tried everywhere in Canada looking for one to no avail.

Frankly any decent gun store is going to charge $50-$100 to cut the stock down, another $50-$75 for a grind to fit limbsaver pad.... just bite the bullet and buy the magpul.

The Magpul would be a nice option for the effect but if that is pricier than you want to pay, maybe a Hogue short LOP stock is another option.

I have been on the search for a Hogue stock for my maverick 88. Seems to have sold out across Canada and no restock. Can only find them used now or have it shipped from the states.

@Jaeger
The Cabela's at Barrie, ON does have the Magpul SGA for Mossberg in limited stock.

how much was shipping, been waiting for one of our vendors but i have not seen any in stock for a while.

Can you not grind the pad that’s on the stock now? That would be the first thing I’d try.

Honestly I would reccomend that you put your effort into finding an SGA stock instead of shortening the stock one. I've installed one on my 590A1 SPX and it's the best thing ever.

First, it makes the LOP much much much shorter (I'm 6 feet tall but I guess my arms are short cause I would often find myself short stroking it). Secondly, if you're used to training with ARs and other (tactical) rifles, the angle of the grip resembles that of a pistol grip but you still retain easy access to the tang safety. Thirdly, it just looks freaking awesome.

I shortened my mossberg factory stock from about 14.5” to about 12.5” which amounted to a total of 12.75” with a single mount sling plate mounted on the receiver.

The factory recoil pad can be ground down with a belt sander to match the shortened stock footprint.
It is even everywhere except the toe of the stock where the grindable portion has hit the core and can’t be ground further. This leaves a small 1/4” overhang at the toe.

The recoil pad screw mounts in the stock are still useable at 12.5” but you can’t go much shorter then that before the molded plastic for the screw mounts gets too short.

I hope this helps you make your decision.
When I did it it was hard to find Magpul stocks. I’m happy with it as 12.75” LOP is about perfect for me.

I tried the 12" Hogue stock and got rid of it after a couple shells... I felt cramped and went with a Choate pistol grip stock that was in the middle of the stock length vs the Hogue. Fractions of inches matter when you are trying to get the right stock.

The hogue looked like something they put on a Youth model shotgun.

Choate looks like this and had spacers to put in or take out for desired LOP

Everyone who has the Magpul says it's the best for ergonomics... you have options. Butchering your original stock is free, try it if you want.

I tend to agree regarding the Hogue, even though I was the one posting it as a suggestion to achieve the desired LOP.

Short LOP stocks like Hogue were generally developed for those wearing bulky armour+gear and shooting with a more squared off stance. Of course, youth model shotgun stocks have the same effect.

Nevertheless, natural LOP and preference aside, there are options that exist. Personally, I prefer longer LOPs.
