Empty casing question

Hey all.

I'm shooting a new Beretta 92FS, and I'm new to the pistol domain. I have a question for anyone with experience in the field. I want to practice my stoppage drills, and I was wondering:

Can I load an empty casing into my magazine, and still have the pistol function normally? (I mean when the action cycles, it will pick up the empty casing instead of a live round)

Will this harm my pistol in any way/shape/form? The manual says to use a dummy round or empty casing for dry firing, so I want to make sure all of the actions cycling with an empty casing wont cause unnecessary wear and tear.

Thanks for the help! (Any yes, the pistol is functioning perfectly. I want to do this for my own accord.)

Are you talking about loading a mix of live ammo and spend cases?

I've never done it... the chances are it won't feed, but who knows 92 is a very reliable design...I wouldn't do it though, the case wall under the pressure of the recoil spring might scratch the frame...

just get snap caps OR make your own dummy ammo.

Without a bullet seated into the casing, it won't chambered. That say you need to make a dummy round inorder to cycle. May be you can ask some other gunnutz to make you some dummy round.

Go buy some snap caps. Get the A-Zoom aluminum ones. They cost a bit more but they're worth it. The plastic ones fail in short order. Practicing with live and inert rounds is good at the range. Practice ONLY with inert rounds at home.

Where is a good place to get the A-Zoom ones?

I was looking at practicing at the range with a mix of live/dummy ammo. I am pretty sure that I have a twitch, and I want to verify, and if so, isolate it.

I think you mean flinch ;)

the easiest thing to do it take a fired case and seat a bullet in to it. Some stores sell semple bullets for relaoding for like 10 cents each. But I'd mark the dummy ammo somehow, so you'll know that it's dummy round and not a dud primer on a live round ;)

Yes, flinch is what it's called.

As for the seating a bullet onto a fired case, the closest gun/ammo shop to me is Brockville (Gun-mart), which is a $15 ride from a friend with a car. It's about the same cost as ordering a 5-pack, minus the shipping. Since it will be about the same price, I figured might as well get something that is specifically designed to take dry firing. If I had my own car, or a cheaper method of transportation, I'd be all over that idea.

you don't need a gun/ammo shop for that- just a guy with a press, and get him to either seat a dud primer or not remove the expended one -ican get 1 done in about a second- there must surely be someone in town that reloads 9- any of the guys out here would do it for you- as far as marking it goes, i just use an oddball headstamp- ie make it the only federal or winny or whatever you've got, and keep it in a baggie- i don't use mine so much as a snap cap as a means to set my dies without having a live round in the press
i can tell you from experience that a casing WILL CATCH ON THE FRAME ON THE BERETTA 92 UNLESS YOU HAVE A BULLET OR SIMILAR SHAPE IN THE CASING

t-star: Noted. The problem with reloading is that myself and the people I shoot with can't. I'm on a military base, and anything related to ammo is prohibited in the barracks.

I can give a call to a member or two that I know from the range. I'll at least look into it, but not knowing many people from the club means that there's not a lot of people to call.

One problem with pressing up some dummy rounds is their remarkably similar look to live ammo. Unless you paint your training rounds or drill holes in the side of the case, you're setting yourself up for disaster.

Wholesale sports has A-Zoom rounds in stock.

DARNED NEW ARMY- back in the days of the c1smg and the fn, we had fancy chrome plated drill rounds all over the place-but we had CHROME bayonets too-

I ended up calling Lyman Products in Il, USA. They had a 5 pack of the 9mm Luger for $15.98 plus shipping. The kind lady gave it to me for the actual shipping, which I was told would be about $2-3 instead of the usual $6. It always pay to make conversation with people. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

well first for a flinch , practice dry fire.. Slowly , repeat the steps and squeeeeze the trigger. , making sure everything is lined perfectly. practice in front of a wall with a target if you wish.
Do this every day 15 - 20 minutes, watch how your groups improve at the range ;)

Hope this helps

An empty case MAY feed but you stand a better chance of buggering up the feed ramp on the frame.

Use an inert round.

I make my own, and fill the primer pocket with hot glue.

You can also use an indentifier like colour the brass black etc.
