The legendary Whelen

put it back in original stock, fixed the crack maybe and havnt shot it... took to the stock finish an took the shine off it but didnt get around to rubbing sme darker oil on it.
now... serious Question.... Are these now somewhat a Rarity thats at time often wanted, esp being in Aus, mostly 7600s around the traps for deer hound hunting, couple Rems about

As a rarity Yes I would say they are.

I check the 3 gs near me and unless i missed one ... in the last 15 years have not seen a 35 Whelen
check CGN almost every day and not seen one for sale ... yes maybe showing off .. but not for sale
I have never seen one in person at my gun club

I bought some 30-06 brass 5 years or so ago from a brass dealer found 1 35 whelen ... found a dozen or so 270

I am working on a 35 whelen now .. contacted several gun smiths none of them had a reamer

Plan on shooting 230g cast loads with it :) and plan on shooting it lots this summer

different people will find different stuff at there lgs but bigest animal around is Moose for me then bear then deer and all of them can be dropped by the 30-30 or 308

and I do not think any manufacture has a current rifle on the books in 35 whelen for 2021

Just like 358 winchester, I think only Browning makes one and the blr in 358win I see maybe 4 or 5 a year up for sale passed on the last buba one i saw

just checked online

Remington Core-Lokt 35 Whelen, 200 Gr, PSP, 20 Rds
$67.95

so if you are shooting factory you better have a big wallet

Funny times, i was bored This evening, this thread got my mind stalking through dense bush again... with a ruger.
so...

now wears the 2-7x33 loopy and looks like all i have is 29X 200gr TSX projectiles to load....lets hope it likes them LOL.

i believe there is 4 250gr to get this scope back on track for minimal waste of the TSX with some minimal load Development!

....

here a photo of her tonight...

Otto Bock did it first and did it better.:p

I agree, but for most of us here in NA who do not require a rifle for truly dangerous game, a 35 Whelen will not give up anything to the great 9.3x62.

Sorry man, got you confused with SuperCub LOL.

I no longer own that rifle. My gun collection has been the victim of downsizing both is numbers and bore size. The largest bore I own now is 30cal. Saying that, that 20" 7600 was a fine set-up.

Also ...... For those who missed it, here is the proper spelling of the cartridge in question. :)

Whelens are great. I have had rem700 and currently a cooper Excalibur in the cartridge. The Cooper is great but I’m looking to sell it to build a custom off of a kimber Montana. I have a love for the kimber rifles.
I have a custom 9.3 as well but I have more love for the 35. The kills are alway spectacular with the Whelen. If I could only have one rifle for big game hunting the world the Whelen would be it.
I will be putting the cooper up for sale soon if anyone is interested.

I love my tang safety Ruger .35 W it’s accurate and with 250 Hornady’s it puts game down quickly.

My 35 Whelen H&R is on the exact opposite end of the spectrum as the very nice Ruger #1's but nevertheless it has been a great little hunting rifle for me. With the Leupold 2.5-8x36 for glass on it handles quite nicely and while not a lightweight it seems to carry well enough for what I do. Having a little extra weight seems to tame the recoil as the kick is not bad at all for this rig.
I think I will eventually need to pick up another Whelen in a Ruger #1 or maybe a Rem 700 but for now the Handi-Rifle works just fine.

I had a handi in the 35W it was super accurate, I was a fool for selling it!

My Whelen is reasonably accurate, maybe not a tack driver but it's definitely minute of deer!
There was a 35 Whelen handi-rifle on the EE a couple weeks ago, not sure if it's still there or not.....

Hey a thread I can participate in!
I built a 35W on a Savage. 22” McGowen barrel and Boyd stock.
The magnum contour barrel makes front heavy. Maybe I’ll send it out to get the barrel fluted.
I’ve only shot one deer with it. I was using Hornady FTX, which I knew wasn’t a good choice and boy it sure wasn’t. Frontal shot didn’t splash but it didn’t even make it to the diaphragm.
Bought some 220 grain Speer HotCor to load now.

Ive got the lust for a Wood stocked rifle hunt tomorow morning, I've bene carrying the plastics around lately mostly the 3006 A bolt and the 7 rem mag but im in need of a freezer filling Sambar deer and would like a mature Hind at least for a good meat collection.

Ive got the Whelen Bug , with these remaining 200gr TSX an make a proper effort to put one to good use.. my whelen for this trip is sighted for dead on at 100m , as i plan on being in pretty tight bush-

typically its Fallow deer hunting time of the year but they have been giving me a real run around this week, so off to the deeper bush gulleys to find a Sambar, im looking forward to it, if i can get some sleep.

hope to have a report on the TSX performance by tomorow evening..... lol, we'll see!

The 250 Hornady SP is an excellent bullet in the Whelen.

Yeap i agree! i put a few of them into Buffalo up in the North of the Country..
was a go to in the Whelen for Sambar too, pretty stout projie with good expansion..

I didnt get away this morning, it is just too hot to bother still.. Rain due tomorow should change the thinking a little more!

I am considering picking up a 35 Whelen in a pump or semi and flipping my BLR in 358 Win. Looking for a little more punch in the thick bush and short range.

What for? Yer 358 BLR be all ye need for a woods rifle on most any critters found here. The Whelen be good, but the .358 Win be better suited for shorter action rifles.
