Dangerous game scopes

The Leupold 1.5-5 and similar were good scopes for your application 20 years ago. Now there are so many better LPVO options.

For illumination I prefer a single red dot over complete reticle illumination for a hunting scope of this style. I would start with scopes that use that feature and go from there.

I really don’t know why someone would think a scope with a throw lever will freeze up? It’s not like variable power scopes are something new.

just ouf of curiosity which ones do you have in mind?

Honestly, they have excellent optics, but I generally enjoy things like feature set. I didn't generally like their reticle choices, I found their turret systems behind the times, and as I do a fair amount of shooting at longer distance I tended away from them. This is a totally different game though.

i had issues back in the day in europe but i do liked their german 4 and 1 very well.

Depends on your budget and what features you like but I would use this Vortex I just installed on my Ruger Scout over the Leupold 1.5-5

My 375 Ruger carries a VX6 HD Leupold with a bit more magnification and a fire dot reticle and Leupold makes a 1-6 with the firedot if you want to stick with a Leupold LPVO.

About the only thing going for the 1" tube Leupold 1.5-5 is that it's inexpensive compared to some of the newer and better other offerings that are available now.

I won't lie, cost is a factor as I'll also be adding irons and doing some work, but that just means if I spend on an ugmpgrade I'll get something worthwhile. Pst gen 2?

Is illumination essential?

That's my question. I haven't NEEDED it to hunt so far, but I've found it very useful. I've taken black bear, elk, moose, and deer with and without, but I've never chased any of the bigger predators or herbivores (bison, waterbuffalo, cape, leopard lion or any others), so I'm looking for opinions. I have a leupold 1-4 with a heavy duplex, I was just wondering if I should seriously consider upgrading.

the problem with any reticle is how it will work for you when you re close to the dark or in a forest or timber with a dark skin or fur.

heavy duplex is maybe not the solution a german 4 or 1may worth the try.

one of the best illumination system i ve seen was on the bushnell elite 1.25-4x24 with german 4 little dot. but only one problem short eye relief and 30 mm rings scope.

You don't need a "modern" big, thick, clunky, knobby, heavy electronic turd sitting on top of your rifle to be completely effective... of course if that is your preference, fill your boots. Old school? Maybe, but a low power straight 1" tube, light, slender, streamlined scope can do exactly what you are looking for.

Thats the idea, but if I can find something streamlined that has the illumination as a bonus, thats a pretty big leap imo. I've hunted timber and it does help, I've missed shots on whitetail due to low light shenanigans.

Dangerous game scopes and various LVPO are coming closer together last few years it appears.

Absolutely. The advantages of a modern LPVO absolutely translate to hunting situations. A true 1x setting with a red dot reticle give you the fastest close range aiming system possible. Most feature compensating reticles to take advantage of longer shots if desired. Typically the modern LPVO will offer better light transmission and increased field of view on low magnification. There is more elevation and windage adjustment as well.

Whenever you add illumination it is going to bump the price up, which is a trade off.

i tend to agree about old school still working for what we re doing.

My second trip to Africa was in 2018, I rented the camp gun from the outfitter. It was a CZ 550 in 9.3 x62 with a Leupold VX-3i 1-5.5 x20. It was a accurate rifle and fit me reasonably well, but the scope had a weird tactical reticle that was great for close in shots in dim light (leopard hunting) but terrible for longer shots on small game (Springbok). I would have much preferred a German No. 4 reticle or even a heavy duplex.

Excellent advice! If I can afford to get another big gun after, I'd like to keep an eye out for a BRNO 602 or a CZ550, they have a stellar reputation.

The width of those secondary reticles really turned me off as well. Same as Burris optics. Went NF as soon as I could afford one. Yeah a bit pricey, but it wasn't the crazy expensive ATACR and I am happy with it.

Ok, I need to be educated here!! LPVO? And if it is what I think it is, is there any of them that have non tactical reticle? Is there any that don’t have crazy bulky turrets? Is there any that are no more than 30mm tubes? Is there any that are simple, light, decent to good quality for less than a $1000? This is all genuine interests and questions !
Thank you
