I’m going to get a CZ 457 heavy Varmint barrel model in .22 lr .. with barrel lengths of 16.5,20 and 24 respectfully, is there any advantage or disadvantage for specified barrel lengths in 22lr.

Depends on what you want to do with it. Some people choose the shorter barrel length to keep rounds subsonic as there is accuracy issues when lead goes transonic to subsonic. So if your punching paper you might want the shorter barrel.

I had an MTR with a 16.5 , just couldn't warm up to it
they have a louder report as well .
Sold it and now I have 2 MTR's (.17 & .22 ) both
with 20'' barrels.
Xlnt guns.. skwerl

My CZ452 Lux with the 25" barrel is accurate and quiet. Longer barrel really helps with noise reduction for the shooter.

I got the CZ 457 At-One 16.5” and it’s quite impressive with cheapo federal Automatch ammo. Shot this target this past weekend.

Hitting actual size ladybugs and mosquitoes at 50M is no small feat for any 22LR rifle.

I beleive the .22lr maxes out its velocity at around 12 or 14 inches of barrel length. At least thats what ive read. If so, anything past that would slightly slow the bullet if anything

It depends on which study you read and how well the parameters were controlled, but velocity should be the last consideration when choosing a rimfire barrel length.

Well velocity certainly factors into accuracy. But i do agree it isnt the primary factor. I noticed that 16" non bull barrel rifles have a very different balance to them. I find them to sway a lot while shouldered.

The CZ 457 Varmint itself is available with a 20.5" barrel. There are other models, such as the CZ 457 MTR Varmint, that have the shorter 16.5" barrel as an option.

The shorter barrel will be louder and will ballance differently from the longer barreled versions. The shorter barreled MTR rifle is about 33.6" in length (less than a yardstick); the longer barreled MTR is about 38" long.

For the purposes of accuracy, a slower .22LR MV is desirable as it will drift less in the wind. HV ammo is not a good choice for accuracy. Go with standard velocity ammo.

I have to agree that the 20" is a good balance between not too short and not too long.
However, I prefer longer barrels (22"+) for off the bench and my 12" Norc Backpacker for all day woods carry/plinking.

Depends on what your going to do with it.....

I would get what looks best to you, when I seen the 16.5" MTR I knew I had to have it, it my mind it was built just how I like my guns, it's shot very well so far with SK ammo the 2 times I've had it out. If you do decide to get the 16" let me know, my local shop has one cheaper than you will find online,

Im in between the 20" Varmint walnut stock & 16.5" Pro Varmint.. The 20 is pleasing to my eye, and has visual balance... the 16.5 has a tactical look, with a threaded barrel, so I can add some length with a device... Its only going to be a paper puncher.

Some encouragement, Beware the 16.5 MTR is threaded 1/2x20, I haven't been able to source a brake yet that would look good. Purely aesthetics of course
