Well, out of ammo, but now have 40 spent cases. I need some dies and out comes the Trail Boss. I almost forgot how much fun big bore shooting is. The Henry 45-70 is a boat load of fun and a sturdy well-made rifle. After 4 shots, however, I need to put it down for a few minutes! A high volume shooter it is not. Looking forward to making some reduced recoil loads.

I reload for 45/70 only so far,but it's a lot of fun.my loads are limited to three different bullets,hornady ftx325 grain using Hornady cases ,405 grain fnsp using standard length cases,and 350 hornady round nose that can't be loaded in a mag tube but shot clover leafs at75 yards.the only powder I've tried is h322 and I have a reloading manual and scales and a cheap,Lee loader.
So far I've had excellent results with my reloading for 45/70 ,the hand loads are all geat on big game ,having taken deer and bear with each load,accuracy is there ,I might not change much for this cal.I do not like shooting those hsm bear loads ,I would say those are more for bear defence that actual hunting ,they do way to much damage to the animal .

That is one thing Marlin did well with their 1895, the butt pad is so nice you can shoot a whole box of ammo, no problem

The buttpad on the Henry is just as good as the buttpad on the Marlin 1895 I used to own. I think I am just getting old. I bought a nice Past field shield several years ago for when I am shooting 12 gauge. It might be a good idea with 45-70 as well.
you will have fun this spring with bear hunt.
I too picked up a new 45-70 last week. Chiappa 1886 ridge runner 12”. It’s amazing how little velocity is lost even with the short barrel. 45-70 is a very fun cartridge. Even more so if you reload. Enjoy your new purchase. ��

1895 w/22" barrel, Wild West tidbits, shooting Hornady 350 gr RN at a medium velocity is one of the easiest to have fun with as well as to stop trouble with

I had a standard 95 that went back to the UK with a buddy a few years back . I picked up a Guide Gun to replace it and found out , like you , that I prefer the 22' barrel , pistol gripped model . The 1895G is a very accurate , handy rifle and isn't going anywhere , but I can see me picking up another standard 1895 some day .
What makes it a "C" variation? Have a few of the 1S .45-70's.. I'm curious as to their different versions.

As much as I love my metrics, 7x57, 8x57, 7x64, 6.5x55, 7.62x39, etc. etc., the 45-70 will always have a place in my locker! My problem is that my shoulders can only handle so many full house loads! My range buddy was remarking that because my Henry has no side gate, it makes a piss poor home defence gun. I looked at him and smiled, and said, if you can't do what you have to do with 4 in the tube and 1 in the chamber, you have miserably failed. Then I told him to fling 4 factory Hornady 325 FTX factory loads down range. He did, then quietly put down the rifle without an interest in the world to shoot any more. I mentioned he should load one extra in the chamber for sh!t n' giggles, but nope he was done. While my trusty Brno 21 in 7x57 is my dedicated spring bear gun, it's still with Jason Spencer having a ZG-47 bolt fitted. So, the 45-70 will get the nod as back-up. Thinking of the tried and true Remington 405gr Core-Lokt as a reasonable 100 meter substitute.
Anyone got any easy shooting loads they like for some trigger time, with out getting beat up?
Just got my first 45-70 haven't even shot it yet ruger no.1 looking for ward to it but just interested what you guys use to plink with?

Any of the trapdoor loads then go up from there. Hodgdon has lots of loads with various bullets and powders.
If buying then get the safe for all rifles factory loads. Though once you see how much you will pay for factory ammo you’ll be reloading or not shooting much.
