In the US I am familiar with 5.56 NATO .223 wylde, but up here I rarely see 556, it's 223 REM. What are the main differences between the 2, aside from the nomenclature?

Thank you!

^^^^ Agreed. Bill, who is a great guy BTW, designed a chamber specification to use both .223 and 5.56. It is the halfway for ammo adaptability.

The reason that you see more .223, or at least ammo listed as .223, is that being a “civilian” caliber it is easier to export than a military caliber. Although that may not be completely true when talking about export to Canada, but there are many countries that will not allow the import of military calibers. Chances are that the overseas/export divisions of the ammo manufacturers find it easier to simply export .223 to all the countries they are allowed to export to, rather than try and keep track of what you can export where.

I agree though that much of the 556 is sold out or out of stock now so I try to grab some whenever I can at my local shop (strangely they have a better selection of 223 ammo). My 556 rifle can take 223, so I am trying to use up some of that old ammo from years past, while storing up 556 for a rainy day.

We have Federal 5.56, 55 FMJ in stock at $375 for case of 500. Also lots of .223 ammo as well. Phil.

As for rifles, I heard that manufacturers in other countries find it easier to export firearms of civilian .223 caliber than "military" 5.56 caliber. So we see more .223 firearms in the market. Even the Isreali X95 rifles are marked .223.
