In the US I am familiar with 5.56 NATO .223 wylde, but up here I rarely see 556, it's 223 REM. What are the main differences between the 2, aside from the nomenclature?

I agree though that much of the 556 is sold out or out of stock now so I try to grab some whenever I can at my local shop (strangely they have a better selection of 223 ammo). My 556 rifle can take 223, so I am trying to use up some of that old ammo from years past, while storing up 556 for a rainy day.
