45- 70

Anyone got any easy shooting loads they like for some trigger time, with out getting beat up?
Just got my first 45-70 haven't even shot it yet ruger no.1 looking for ward to it but just interested what you guys use to plink with?
Planning on reloading for it no dies yet.

14gr unique with 405gr cast.

seems to me that there is a lot of 45/70 for sale , did I miss some thing.

It's one gun for all hunting purposes. I will never part with mine. 45-70 Marlin 1895 sbl have had it for years, one of the best guns I have and if I ever have to give every one of them up it will be the only one I will keep. But then again, I live in the mountains of BC and find it has many uses. It is more than just a plinking toy for me.

I agree,45/70 have taken game at long distances ,and in the bush it's a top notch performer,Can be loaded heavy or light ,and most every one I've had a chance to shoot will impress in the accuracy. Department.Even plinking at the range is a blast!

My Thumper arrived today.....

Wood to metal fit is as perfect as one can get, besides this is gonna be a hunter/bush pusher and I tend to slip on the wet, leaf covered rocks when doing a drive up in WMU 47 Ontario. I’m getting older.

The FNC finish on the stainless is better than perfect (Ferric Nitro Carburizing) and I could not be happier. Yup, it’s a 1895 GSBL in .45-70 and Life is Good!! So stoked to crank out some loads soon with the inbound boooolits from Bullet Barn in Northern AB. 350 grainers, single lube channel, bevelled base, Flat nose.

Fiber optics sights from the factory jump at your eye. What an upgrade.... super pleased. :)

I’m a laminated stock/painted synthetic / painted stock guy so beauty walnut and me don’t get along. Actually, I’m a jinx when it comes to fine wood, if there’s a way to fzck things up, I will. So better leave me with bombproof stocks when I’m hunting/ tripping and falling in the woods.

I’m a big loop fan boy from the get go...... even my .30-30 336W BL is factory BL supplied....

My factory stock set was a beauty laminated furniture from the laminated forest (as Hickok45 would say) but I wanted a Marlin DARK .30-30 on the cheap so I painted another replacement stocks set and sold that factory originals.

This 336W sure is fun to horse around at the range using 100 grain Speer pinker booolits, and then a bunch of 110 grain Hornady SP booolits . My wife sure appreciates that low recoil effect.

Range report once I get some handloads put together..... Say, anybody got a spare RCBS #14 shell holder they can sell me? These shell holders sure are scarce. I’m driving down to Waterloo’s Shooter’s Choice on Colby Drive tomorrow. See if I can find some .45-70 accoutrements.

Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney

45-70 is the king of lead poisoning and Im OK with that. Loved the Marlin 1895 all weather. Was awesome hitting a gong at the range but like everyone else it seems to get old carrying it around the bush so back to the bolt and a detachable mag it is. Want a .44mag Marlin Dark badly to scratch that itch as selling it hurt.

Curious to hear your review, and pics.

I haven’t shot it yet but after a little cleaning working the action abit it smoothed out nicely. The fit and finish is nice as is the colour case hardening. I haven’t handled an 1886 action before I was surprised to see how short the over all package was with a 22” barrel. I’m thinking the steel butt plate is going to be a little rough. I have some reloading stuff on order from budget shooter supply to get my ammo supply going.

It's a has-been cartridge. Very limited range, probably no more than 800 yards for most shooters. Ridiculous recoil...and I do mean ridiculous; my 100-pound granddaughter shoots several of mine and always laughs like...well, like a little girl. Useless on game much bigger than a hippo; even deer sometimes take a step or two after taking one of the big slugs. Virtually no factory loads available, and reloading info is scarce. Almost impossible to buy high-capacity magazines or a decent pistol-gripped chassis for one of these guns. Muzzle brakes are non-existent. None of mine have ever had a buffer tube, so swapping out for a new Magpul stock is tricky.

A waste of time and money, really. I've sold most of my rifles in this chambering, only have four or five left that I keep around for old times' sake.

Too funny.

seems despite all negativity in you put a lot of love into it.

I feel the cartridge is at it's best with 405 grain lead bullets at trap door velocities (1400 fps) That's how I shoot mine with excellent results. It's only limitation is it's usable range of 125 yards. I seldom require any more distance considering the type of country I hunt.

That sounds like a "you" limitation, and not the cartridge itself.

Do not think it is a (has-been ) cartridge. It is doing pretty good for one that was condemned as obsolete 100 plus years ago.

My favourite bear rifle. Marlin sbl in 45-70. I always take it shooting when I use high power. Even if its only a mag tube worth of ammo. No other rifle puts a smile on face and a stiffy in pants, quite like this one.

That "stiffy" might be caused by the recoil jingling your nervous system! :)

All you need is a mag tube full, or you have no business pointing a gun.

I don't find the leverevolution ammo has much recoil in my sbl, neither does the remington 405 grain ,My hand loads are the easiest to shoot, but those dang Buffalo bore and HSM bar loads,I don't care much for those lol.I shot one bear with the hsm loads from a treestand ,a broadside shot just behind the front shoulders ruined a lot of meat,I never saw so much bloodshot in my life.
