SHTF : Why AR's ?

You know how when you throw a party and tell your buddies to keep it quiet and then the next thing you know you don't recognize anyone at the now out-of-control party and your place gets wrecked? Well, it'll be something like that except those people are going to be hungry, thirsty, scared and really, really stressed-out. Do you think they'll be reasonable when you tell them that you don't have enough supplies for them and their kids, even for a couple of days, even if they have cash? You are going to be in a situation where you either submit and accept those new people and let them all in, or you fight or posture thereby making yourself big target.

You have to be really selective about who knows that you are prepared and to what extent. The best thing that can happen for you is if your city buds never mentioned your cache to anyone, (which is unlikely because they have already told their city buds about what a 'paranoid whackjob' you are) and the next best thing is them (and whoever they bring) being unable to reach your destination. If I were in your situation in a SHTF scenario, I'd consider dropping them as soon as they came into range - they have already indicated that they are unprepared and expect YOU to help them survive. Well, f**k THAT. I'd rather have dead buds than living burdens to me and my family.

You're absolutely right. It's easier to keep your preparations under wraps than it would be to mount severed heads with gaping GSWs on sticks at intervals around your perimeter...

as long as you dont cook off rounds and frag up your mellow.

Duly noted. Ths board is such a wonderful source of safety information... :D

uhm -- its not necessary (or wanted) to make 7 different replies all right in a row -- read thru the thread - pick out the comments you wish to respond to - and respond.
Thx.

Nobody is going to survive alone for long, so granted, you will need other people you can rely on. We all have a use - but only if we aren't a threat or a burden. That said, there is a difference between networking with other like-minded people you can rely on, and showing off.

Yep, the gang/clan/militia route would be the way to go. Together we stand, divided we fall!

The good thing is they would prolly not be able to make it here. If they did they would make great looting goons to I'll take them as 'dispensables'.

A 200 lb guy can 'appropriate' me alota whiskey!
Hahahah.

I always wonder if we'll end up shooting at each other during shtf, since most of us are CGN'ers anyhow. :runaway: :p

We should all meet up in a super secret "underground lair" (insert your best Dr Evil imitation) and defend it together! :p

You got email with the map right?

:D

That why I always wanted one of those old missile bases -- make a great compound with built in bunker

We can make it a rule that everybody has to bring at least 1 daughter, sister, wife, or girlfriend.

Of course we'd build a separate bunker for them to stay in... with a door that only opens from our side.

Not many people will survive TSHTF if firefights are a big part of it. The reasons are numerous. Here are a few:

-Most people have no actual combat experience. What you think and hope you'll do in combat is usually very different from what you will actually do.

Watching combat on TV from the comfort of your couch in a warm house, pausing once in a while to grab another beer might have misled you as to how it actually feels like to be under fire in a cold, dark place, scared ####less. Many people don't have the will to return fire when someone shoots at them.

If you have never been shot at with intent, you have never experienced paralyzing terror. That fear usually removes a person's capacity to do anything else other then cower or run.

You've heard about the "fight or flight" instincts that are hard wired into our brains; most of us react with the "flight" part of it.

You won't know who you're fighting, how strong they are, what their strategy is, etc.

All those factors will either get you killed really fast or will take the will to fight right out of you, especially if you have women and kids with you.

- You have no means to resupply once you've burned through your ammo.

Two, three thousand rounds of ammo is nothing if you are engaged in a steady firefight; you can burn that up in a matter of a few short hours or less.

-You have no medical support.

The smallest gun wound could spell your death (be it fast or slow) if you don't have it taken care off by someone who knows what they're doing, in sanitary conditions.

The S will HTF sooner or later but on a scale from "1" to "10", where at "1" everyone bunkers down in their house playing video games and eating Kraft Dinner and at "10" the bikers from The Road Warrior have surrounded your house , I think a "4" or a "5" is the max will see around these parts of the world.

If there is civil unrest, it will be directed mostly at the government, in the form of demonstrations and riots and they will be contained in certain areas.

Crime will most likely take a turn for the worse, but at that point you will have your doors and windows fortified a bit and a firearm on hand in your house, just in case.

Human society has a natural tendency to maintain a basic social structure even in the worst of times so I doubt that neighbors will start shooting each other.

The main reasons to own firearms when TSHTF are, in no particular order, these: deterrence, basic home defense against desperate small time robbers, hunting and ensuring your safety when traveling through bad spots.

You might never get to shoot your guns, or if you do it will most likely be into the air so an AR 15 will be just as good when TSHTF as an SKS.

The main benefit of owning any gun will be a boost to your self confidence.

Have water, have food, have guns. No mater what happens, you will not be worse off by having them.

How about we hire Blackwater to protect us?

Or...

What would it take to start our own "Security Group".. Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge..
We can get the Goverment to pay for our SHTF Base, and all the other kewl stuff too, like Helos and tanks!!
