Ithaca NID SxS 20 ga....stocking update

I wouldn’t say the project is moving slow at all. If I were on the rasp I’d be headed out for another walnut blank already ;)

Plus glaciers are moving quite quickly these days.

Looks awesome so far by the way.

Now you're holding out on us... It must be almost finished by now!

Its hardly fair that be2man got a sneak peek the other day, but he is right, I am a little farther along than the thread would suggest.

The shaping of the wrist goes fast compared to the back. Problem is, I had to catch myself a few times. If I get too enthusiastic with the rasp, wood disappears for ever.

I left the pistol grip pretty big thinking it would feel better in my hand, similar to a sporting gun with a "palm swell". After looking at it and handling it, I think i will take it down in size. The 20 ga frame and feel just looks and feels out of proportion.

So, here is the rough shape. Now I am on to sculpting the area where the receiver meets the stock. Its fiddly work with little files and sandpaper and I am doing it mostly "by eye". Plan is to reduce the grip and shave the forestock down last by feel and look. The gun is kinda heavy right now at 7lbs even.

Wow. Great progress!

Do you plan on doing your own checkering?

David

Yes, that is the plan. Likely do something simple at the very end of the job.

Either that, or stipple it with a soldering iron, paint it wolf grey and put a flashlight mount on the front....after I saw the barrels down to 12”.....LOL

Would really like to know your setup for lamp black, if you don't mind. I have been burning painter's tape and it makes a heck of a mess...

All I did was use a cheesy oil candle/lamp affair my wife had. I pulled the wick out a little too long (maybe a half inch) and lit it. It burns dirty. I hold the item over the flame until it becomes sooty (few seconds) then blow the flame out to keep it from getting all over. It has simple lamp oil in the reservoir.

Its the thing with the crap flowers in it in this picture.

Hope this helps.

OK...I am finally happy with the shape.

I sealed the inletted parts with Krazy glue in areas I wanted some "build" and in other areas, I used thinned polyurethane and a small hobby paint brush. I looks pretty ugly, but its fine.

After a fine sanding to remove any swirls from the sander, I wiped it with a wet rag to whisker it before final sanding and oil application.

My enthusiasm is picking up, so I may hit it this afternoon with the red-root dye.

Helps a lot! Thanks for responding. Looks amazing, good work!

It's coming along very nicely, Dilly. Are your fingers purple from working with black walnut? Anyway, you should be proud of the effort and results so far.
