Bear Hunting season is here! Excited

Looking forward to it. A few more weeks before i get out for more than a few hours of scouting. Going to the range and verify my zero for my 7mm rem mag.

If i can get the time to slip north this spring id like to try a 10ga. 1.75oz slug at 1375fps should let some light into one. I may have to wait till fall though

Mein Vater hat einmal Baeren Schinken gemacht. War ein garbage dump Baer, also Nein Danke.

Grizz

Ack Schinken ist sehr gut. Ich habe noch nicht ein Bear geschossen. Ich denke ich werde Wurst, Südafrikanische Droewors und Hams machen.

Wir haben ein Deutsch Metger im Stad. Er kann mich hilfe.

Opens April 1 in Region 7a in BC. i wont pursue them until the end of april or early may. when i start seeing green grass is when i decide to go looking. its will be the 308 gunsight scout with open sights shooting 180gr trophy bonded tips. or might try the k31 with 180grain interlocks.

Yeah, season opens tomorrow, but I’m on the north side of town and still have close to two feet of snow in my yard. Less in the bush though. I haven’t hunted bears in years, but it’s my boys first year with a hunter number, so if he shows interest maybe we’ll go. But so far he just talks about getting a bull draw.....

I got the bow and 45-70 sighted in! Still a few weeks to wait before it starts though!

Last year was wild with COVID, tons of action, I can't wait to see what a second year of no American hunters will do, I am pumped!!!

Where will you do that? Are there turkeys around Sudbury now? Been more than fifty years since I was there.

Ted

Nope, I have to drive 5 hours south... well, I really only have to go three, but have a good spot a couple hours further. Our winters are too brutal for the birds... they tried two plants just south of us and the flock lasted a couple winters, but the first bad winter killed them off.

Yeah, I’m way out chief lake road. South or west will be earlier, but if I do take him looking for one, we’ll probably just stick close to home. Most times that I’ve actually gone looking for a bear I’ve managed to find one. Never shot a big one though. If I ever finish my basement maybe I’ll go looking for a rug....

Has anyone had bad experience with federal blue box 180 gr soft point in 308? i bought a new rifle last winter in 308 and didn't start hand loading for it right away. so i bought a few boxes of federal blue box to get me started, spring came around and it was shooting great out of the gun. Fast forward to spring and shot an average size black bear, bear was shot at 125yds. first shot hit his shoulder, he dropped, i dumped 2 more behind the shoulder to put him down for good it was quick and he died a few feet from where it was first shot. when i started processing him in the field i noticed the first shot completely blew up on the shoulder blade and did not penetrate to the vitals. Has anyone else had this experience? i was told the blue box 180 would be adequate for bears, i

this year i hand loaded some trophy bonded tips with solid copper base to avoid the same situation, My shot wasn't ideal but i expected the bullet to hold together better than that.

The shoulder is a big chunk of bone, I think sometimes that 180gr of metal travelling at these speeds drops all it's energy very quickly and breaks apart.

Not ideal, I think bonded bullets might have a reduced likelyhood of doing this but I am not an expert.

Was it actually the blade that the bullet hit? The reason I ask, is the shoulder blade on even a big bear is not very heavy or thick. If it was the big joint at the tubercle of the humerus that was hit, that would be more likely to fragment a bullet.

Good question. While some parts of the shoulder blade are almost paper thin, there are some that are quite thick as I’m sure you know; perhaps that is where pescador’s first shot hit.

to be honest guys i cant remember exactly. i know that the whole shoulder was basically mush and there was a lot of bone fragments but it did not continue to travel into the chest cavity. it must have been the heavier bone.

africa is a bust for me right now due to covid but looks like im taking my new 416 rig and try a blackie. loading up some 350 gr right now and go sight in for easter weekend.cant wait to go walk the logging roads

I like to give them a couple of weeks to clean out their systems and put on a bit of weight before I take one. I like the meat so that's important to me.

I saw a bear on the hillside about a klik away, on the side of a hill last week. Same bear has come out last week in March for the last 8 years. It's a large sow, that usually has a couple of cubs with her. Didn't see any cubs. She's pretty much safe where she wanders. Just above our shooting range and a golf course. Shows herself and cubs quite often.
