Ready to go with the stiga96 in 9.3x62 with norma oryx 325gr
I can't get too excited about bear hunting until after I'm done turkey hunting.
Opens April 1 in Region 7a in BC. i wont pursue them until the end of april or early may. when i start seeing green grass is when i decide to go looking. its will be the 308 gunsight scout with open sights shooting 180gr trophy bonded tips. or might try the k31 with 180grain interlocks.
Where will you do that? Are there turkeys around Sudbury now? Been more than fifty years since I was there.

I got the bow and 45-70 sighted in! Still a few weeks to wait before it starts though!
Last year was wild with COVID, tons of action, I can't wait to see what a second year of no American hunters will do, I am pumped!!!
Yeah, season opens tomorrow, but I’m on the north side of town and still have close to two feet of snow in my yard. Less in the bush though. I haven’t hunted bears in years, but it’s my boys first year with a hunter number, so if he shows interest maybe we’ll go. But so far he just talks about getting a bull draw.....
I live close to salmon valley.. wont be spring for another 2 weeks. could go south towards Quesnel/blackwater. or i could wait 4 more weeks.
Has anyone had bad experience with federal blue box 180 gr soft point in 308? i bought a new rifle last winter in 308 and didn't start hand loading for it right away. so i bought a few boxes of federal blue box to get me started, spring came around and it was shooting great out of the gun. Fast forward to spring and shot an average size black bear, bear was shot at 125yds. first shot hit his shoulder, he dropped, i dumped 2 more behind the shoulder to put him down for good it was quick and he died a few feet from where it was first shot. when i started processing him in the field i noticed the first shot completely blew up on the shoulder blade and did not penetrate to the vitals. Has anyone else had this experience? i was told the blue box 180 would be adequate for bears, i
this year i hand loaded some trophy bonded tips with solid copper base to avoid the same situation, My shot wasn't ideal but i expected the bullet to hold together better than that.

Was it actually the blade that the bullet hit? The reason I ask, is the shoulder blade on even a big bear is not very heavy or thick. If it was the big joint at the tubercle of the humerus that was hit, that would be more likely to fragment a bullet.
