WTF?

162 calf tags in a wmu which has 2900 hunters who applied in the draw last year.( with no calf restrictions)

Hunting Moose just died in our wmu (49)

Way to go MNR you got want you wanted about 2/3 of last years hunters will now not be able to hunt at all.

You have the same mentality as the 19th century Buffalo hunters... not a good plan for the long term.

So let's see... Numbers dropping year after year. Less and less Bull and Cow tags. I wonder how they can let everyone hunt without killing off the moose. Maybe they should change the rules so if anyone gets a tag you can party hunt but only for the adult tag so there are more calf's to grow up. Oh wait that's exactly what they are doing.

The rules have been discussed and laid out for several years. I'm sure when they had open discussions and asked for feedback you were involved? If this is news to you, you have not been paying attention.

Few people know, or at least talk about, the elephant in the room. From both OPP and fellow hunters, I've heard how aboriginal gangs go into an area just prior to the season opener, kill everything under the claims of "aboriginal hunting rights" and "subsistence hunting". Oddly enough, hunt camps get approached by some aboriginals who ask what the hunters are tagged for and then offer to sell them the animal they're permitted. For a small fee, of course. I know members of at least 2 hunt groups who used to head out to northern Ontario, one group had a camp near Thessalon, and one near Terrace Bay, who had that happen to them. Some OPP guys I knew back in the day told me much the same thing, but their hands were tied due to the politics and "optics" of confronting aboriginal poachers. How much money do local businesses lose when hunters don't come anymore. How much revenue does the MNR lose when people stop applying for the moose draw. This is another legacy of the McGuinty/Wynne Liberals!

They would have a good idea on lost revenue based on the cancelled spring bear hunt....(Mike Harris)

Regardless, its tons of money.

There should be one set of rules for hunting that apply to everyone. No one has the balls for that though...

And I'm not just talking hunting and fishing, I'm talking taxes, the whole of life...

It's coming though a ways off yet. Ancestral rights and who was here first argument is being eroded by science. In other words, we ALL have the same ancestors.

Im thrilled with the new system. I hunt that WMU. Bull and cow tags more then doubled. Very good chance my camp gets a bull tag.

We see adult moose every single day of the moose hunt. Extremely frustrating to not have a tag.

Can’t keep hunting what isn’t there. It’s about 15 years too late in my mind but at least they finally did it

Wildlife protection is one of the only good things that government does. I am surprised that a hunter is bothered by the tag system. I do believe that there should be an exemption for people that legitimately live 100% off the land, but I don't believe that is you.

I don’t think anybody in Canada lives 100% off the land period

Cod are now returning to the east coast 30 years after the gov't pulled the plug on the fishery. I remember the level of whining and crying when they did that, was next level, the fisherman droned on about it for about a year. Gov't can't win in these situations -- if they limit the catch people cry they're not getting enough & they're stifling economic development. If they pull the plug cause they allowed too much, people cry they mismanaged the resource.

The difference in the cod fiasco is that the fishermen there had been telling DFO that there was a problem for years. DFO kept insisting there was not, and allowed the (over) harvesting to continue until it completely crashed. This led to Canada's proclamation of our 200-Mile fishing limit in 1977. That limit was pressed by several nations, but Canada stood up and enforced the limit to the extent of Navy gunboats firing warning shots across the bow of at least one ship.

We now have the cod recovering, as a result of strict regulations and enforcement. Think about this.....

Sure, lets keep the land that we gained in those treaties and reneg on the commitments we made to obtain the land. Seems honourable.

The new system was long overdue. The unrestricted harvest of calves in most WMUs was lunacy. As others have said, this system is about 15 - 20 years overdue.

I'd prefer to see a hybrid draw where 80% of the tags go to the highest preference point holders and 20% are random draw. This would prioritize those waiting the longest for a tag while still offering a chance to young/new hunters.

That or start a young/new hunter off with 5 or 6 points.

So its working then. Personally, I wanted zero calf tags available.

If you guys always hunted calves, you must have enough points to garner an adult tag. Unless you never bothered applying to the draw.
