Best Mauser 98 Receiver

Check out Lever Arms, they are offering commercial 98 rifles, chambered for the 8x57, starting around $400. They get more expensive with double set triggers.

They are drilled and tapped, with triggers already regulated.

You can't purchase a decent receiver for that price. Then you would have to machine the receiver for scope mounts. Very easy to rebarrel.

If you want to purchase a new build 98, take a look at the Zastava M70 rifles. They come chambered for most popular cartridges and are well finished/accurate.

Much cheaper and less work than building your own from a surplus receiver.

If you insist on using a surplus receiver, for the thrill/experience of building your own, look at any of the 98 Mausers available, other than those with slightly shorter actions. The shorter action models can be very difficult to get aftermarket stocks for.

A friend of mine found one at Lever arms recently from that batch, double set triggers and chambered in 7mm magnum. Supposedly it was used as a sniper rifle in the Bosnian civil war.

Do you still have any of those small ring customs around, dan? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d love to see some pictures of those.

Sold them all, sadly. Last two were complete rifles, and rather than tear them down, I sold them to a couple of fellows who seemed to appreciate them. I still have one action left I want to build into a fast twist 6.5x57 before I die. - dan

Brevex, I would love to find an action by them!
Love to find one of Fred Wells Magnum m98 actions, but if I stay in reality, BRNO ZG47 or a model 21,with the ZG47 safety :)

Yikes

Even if this is just marketing hype and these are confiscated civilian firearms owning them would make me pretty uneasy.

they used anything that can wear a scope ... i seen m70 in 270 win used as a rifle sniper rifle. a lot of nato troops we re impressed by the dragunov yugo version in 8x57 caliber.

brevex were foundable 30 years for already an arm in their lovely box now ... good luck ... but they were made for left handed and right handed people.

Sure there’s a difference between owning a military rifle and a genocidaires

Why would you want a gun used to snipe civilians in the streets of Sarajevo?

You won’t find any third reich mausers in my collection either.

Guess this isn’t the place for this debate but that gives me the chills

On any K98 action - just the tremor created of sliding the rounds into the receiver through the stripper clip will have have all deer surrender within 8 miles.

I always looked for the FN-98 actions on JC Higgins rifles.

There are probably better 98 actions out there and some that would be rarer and thus more desirable for a higher end full custom, but these used to be easy to find and priced well. Not so many around now.

They can be worked into a nice rifle with the addition of another bolt, safety and bottom.

I have owned a couple 7x57 Brno 21Hs with the square bridges which were very nice, a ZG-47 in 30-06 which was okay, but not as nice as the square bridge 21Hs, and I currently own a round receiver Brno 22H that is probably the worst of the bunch for smoothness of operation, which is not to say it's too bad, just not quite on par with what I have come to expect. I am always tempted to sell the Brno 22H, but it's in 6.5x57 which I think is a darling of round (although probably no different than a 6.5x55, etc.). However, I recently picked up a pre-war sporter in 8x57 (a "guild gun") built on ex-military large ring M98 action apparently proofed between 1899 and 1905 (according to my readings on the Nitroexpress forum) and it is probably the smoothest, most pleasant-to-operate Mauser I have run rounds through by some margin. My current hypothesis is that the very best factory mauser actions aren't going to be as nice as one that somebody has poured a lot of time and money into tuning (or getting a skilled individual to tuned). My data to test my hypothesis is severely lacking as I have very little experience with the often praised 1908, 1909, FN, or Husqvarna actions, having only handled only a few and I will likely never have any experience with the hyper-pricey modern Mauser actions like GMA, Hart and Weiss, etc.

I think if I wanted a good mauser action for a good price in the future, I would look for a old custom rifle with styling or a chambering that is no longer in vogue and harvest it for the parts.

^ any pictures of the guild gun?

I have no intention of doing a full build off a bare receiver, just curious of nuts opinions. Lots of nicely prebuilt rifles for less than it costs to buy a receiver and barrel.

those are great actions. i have one in a 270 that was given to me when my dad passed. only had 10 rounds through it and i still have a half box of early 1950s 270 ammo. i picked up a matching/unmolested higgins in 3006 off the ee last spring for a reasonable price of 500 with shipping in. took it out to the range yesterday and after sighting in the scope, i fired a three shot group using old handloads that cloverleafed at 50 metres. darn but i wish i would have marked down what the load was but have a few rounds left that i will need to tear down to see if i can replicate the load.

looks like the old gal still has lots of potential...sort of like the old 60 year old cougar that lives down the street on the corner, especially after a few beers... :)

I apologize, poor form by me not posting pictures. I fully understand not wanting to do a full custom build (mucho deniro!). This thing, well worn but very nicely appointed, came home for about same cost as a rebluing job.

Yep, and the same is true if you want a utilitarian 80’s or 90’s synthetic gun in a magnum chambering. Often less than the stock would be these days. Crazy

That old girl looks sweet. You can't beat old school craftsmenship. To put that into perspective, if a Ruger American or Savage Axis went through the same history, what would it look like today? It would be long gone. You inspired me to buy yet another gun locker and add a few more. I love Mauser actions of all types. The old German, FN and Brno are by far my favourites. You are also right, there is no perfect factory rifle, as they all need a bit of tuning.

Every new shooter (or old shooter) needs to own at least one quality factory sporter (Mauser based, pre-64 Win, etc.) to really understand quality. I bet we would see less owners of modern mass-produced junk and the race to the bottom would be over. Unfortunately, the manufacturers churn out bean-counter approved garbage, market it to death, and the uninformed flock to it. Sad really.

Going to hug by Brno 21H now. :)

Always nice to inspire a 'nut. After seeing the work on your 21H, particularly that case colour hardening, I might have to see if Chris Griesbach wants to take a run at restoring my old girl.
