is the 3006 dead?

A lot of new choices and marketing. It's still a caliber you find ammo for( except right now) in little stores, stores that often don't have many franchises selling guns and ammo, like Wal-Mart and Cambodian tire.

Certainly not in the same category as 22 high power, 350 mag, or 303 savage.

I can't even imagine not having at least a couple of 30-06 rifles in my gun safes.
The '06 is far from dead, and newer powders have breathed some fresh life into the
100+ Y.O. chambering. Pretty hard to argue with a 180 grain Partition/Accubond, et al,
flirting with 2900 fps. [ IIRC, the original factory 300 H&H was advertised at 2820] Dave.

I agree with that. While I do not own a 30-06 at the moment, I do own two 300H&Hs and consider them just to be glorified '06s.

If I didn't handload, and only owed one, it probably would be a 30-06.

was jus something about it i wasnt a fan of ? popularity maybe and knowing others can do what was needed... i bought to try a X7 06, like the 30-06 itself and sold it off til i found a LH Abolt in SS, it was 30-06, it has been a keeper and will be mostly due to the LH....

130s to 180s do all i need, an i feel with the 130s it gives me a tad more than the 270 win, without loooking too hard to premium or hard to find in aus heavier projies..

Yeah, nah. It's not flashy, but it's been doing yeoman's service for well over a hundred years. I would hazard a guess that most big game hunters have used it on at least once occasion and you're just about guaranteed to find ammunition for it from Digby's Canadian Tire to the gas station in Port Alice to the Kugaaruk Co-op. Try that with the 300 RUM, 280AI, 7x57, or 9.3x62. That all indicates that it is far from dead.

I guess that the 300 Win. Mag. is also a glorified 30-06, being that the 300 H&H is on the shirt tails of the 300 Win.

This /\. I remember as a kid - before my days as a handloader - and going down to the local Peavy Mart to grab a box of ammo. There was always .30-06 there and I always relied on Imperial Sabre Tips.

Is the 3006 dead

General cross-country annual ammo sales of same will indicate whether the venerable .30-06 is on decline or not.

NAA.

It has been correctly said that a .308 can do any thing an '06 can do so I can see going for a milder recoil. Whenever I take out my '06 it is usually just to confirm that it still shoots where it is supposed to. As I am a bit older and lighter I usually limit myself to five rounds. I already have the load refined and have no reason to change it. So I just take it out to shoot it, home to clean it and every now and again I load up another twenty rounds. It hill for sure outlast me.

Jack of all trades, master of non

not fast and flat enough as my 257 Weatherby Magnum, no power enough (stopping power) as my 9.6x62

I don't need, want, or care about a rifle chambered in 3006. It is dead here.

Be the 257 or 9.6x 62 are odd ball that had not much follow up..not even to the level of the heal of the 30-06.
By sheer numbers of people who chosen the 30-06 over those two calibers, there is not too many people who voted your side with their money.

I would buy another rifle in 30-06, but would not even consider any rifle in those two calibers.

It's always been dead to me. Never cared for the recoil of it. Might as well shoot a magnum if you're going to endure that much punishment on your end and mete out more on the receiving end. Personally I'm quite fond of my 270. Its all I need for all I hunt.
