Weatherby Vanguard - sub MOA models worth the extra $$ ?

Whats your saying isnt even comparable, the Model 88 lever action has taken all sorts of big game, many being trophies across North America and Africa. The .22 has taken 1 and was in self defence and a fluke shot. The buck knife has also been used to kill a grizzly this fall in Northern Alberta, gonna compare that to the 88 lever as well??

Then we have Karomojo Bell who killed more elephants than most other people on earth using a .275 rigby, the equivalent of a 7x57 mauser.
So does that make the 275 rigby a top choice for hunting elephant??

The point is that just because the world record whitetail was killed with a model 88,does not in any way make the model 88 the best choice for hunting whitetail.

Layne Simpson did a write-up on it a few months or a year ago...a couple factory loads were even a bit faster in the 24" Vanguard that the 26" Mark V.

And common sense would lead one to believe that those factory loads were developing more chamber pressure in the vanguard rifle.Either the vanguard had a tight chamber,or the mark V had a loose chamber. All other things being equal, the 26" barrel will produce more velocity.

I own and shoot a Weatherby Vanguard in a 338 win mag stainless. out of the box, With a Bushnell 3-9x (50$ at wally), shooting the cheapest ammo I could find (old and random gun show crap), at 22yards I was getting 1 1/2 groups or MOA. After hand loading, adding a nice heavy bi-pod, adjusting the trigger, and learning not to flinch I now can shoot to 300 yards at sub moa. ( once I get on a longer range, Ill see how far it goes)

stubblejumper is right. 1 1/2 inches at 22 yards is me with my SKS, folding stock folded, shooting it one handed like a pistol. Maybe you just had a real may typo moment and meant 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards, which is still fairly crappy for a .338 win mag actually. Most .338's I know are very accurate.

1 1/2" @ 22 yards is almost 7 MOA. Must be some mistake.

You missed my point completly, you exhaust things to death

It shoots!

I took out my new Vanguard in ".257 Roy" this morning, and it shoots really well! With Weatherby factory 100 grain PSP's, it puts three shots into a nice symmetrical cluster less than an inch across. :) Man, is that rifle a pussycat to shoot after bench shooting my .35 Whelen. ;)

I've got it zeroed 2" high at 100 yards for now, and tomorrow I'm taking it out hunting! :D

Eagerly, Jeff/1911.

Sounds like a great deer gun!! Post some pics of the monster you shoot with it;)

Cheers!!

Here is the target I shot today, after firing three shots to dial in the scope. :) It looks to be about a 5/8" spread. I'm really looking forward to loading for this rifle.

It was indeed a model 88,and as the link below also states,Hanson and a fellow hunter missed the buck several times before killing it.Maybe if he had been using a more accurate bolt action,he would have killed it with the first shot.:D

Correct...and he actually hit the antlers with one shot almost breaking them...which would have negated any "record" measurements...I hope Milo bought a better rifle with all the cash he got from that deer

Having a broken antler doesnt negate the scoring process. Take alook at the Johnny King Buck 213 6/8 typical. He blew off one antler with his bolt action rifle.
He would have had the new world record buck but judges ruled that both G3 tines were non-typical thus putting it the non-typical catagory.

Rules change fellows, take alook at the B&C scoring and you will see this.

maybe if the antlers had been a bit smllaer he wouldn't have hit them............:)....and maybe he would have been looking where he was trying to shoot instead of gawking at the rack...:)

I have a WT antler here with a bullet fragment in it.....picked it up off the remains of a deer that I found in the spring.
