300 winchester magnum or 300 wsm?

i had a 300 wsm in the past and found out it was around the 300hh velocity. i had only one 300 win mg but with a short barrel a tikka battue and 2 300 weatherby mag but the hitch is coming back ...

That “itch” must be why you got me to ship those 200gr partitions to ya eh bud lollll

:redface:Opps, missed one. From a site member I picked up another 300 WM a while back in a Weatherby Vanguard S2 Blaze-X.;) To keep it company, I picked up another of the same model from another site member, but this one is in 270 Win.;) Call them my 'Flame Throwers'.

Honest thoughts over what I've seen spanning 20 plus years with both.
First 300 WM was a push feed Model 70 later changed to a M700 Remington BDL. I called that one Windowmaker because I carried it 20 plus years and it did it's job in spades.
My first 300 WSM was an HS Precision and the very first thing I noticed was it seemed to recoil less. Likely due to stock design.
The HS was also minute of angle accurate vs the BDL that was minute of whitetail.
The HS went to a friend to be replaced by an Extreme Weather M70. The BDL went to another young lad and I'm sure it still serves well.

I've still got 2 Ruger 300 Win Mags plus a 300 H&H plus 300 Weatherby but when the safe opens to go hunting the 300 WSM comes out.

Pick your poison.
Debating real world performance on game launching 180 grain bullets is moot.
Every day carry...my choice is 300 WSM.
JMHO

Both will do the job, but it's not that simple. For long range work the action has to be long enough to accommodate the long target bullets.IMHO the shorter action for the WSM is an advantage and that is the route I went. My cousin went old school, said if it's good enough for the snipers, it was good enough for him. H4831 and a ELD bullet and he was happy. He went H4831 because he had a keg of it that I'd given him.

If I was looking for a standard action 300 magnum these days I would want a 300 PRC, although obviously this isn't chambered by as many gun makers as a 300 WM yet. Also, if you are the type of person that subscribes to the "use a common cartridge so you can buy it at rural gas stations because I'm foolish and forget my ammunition at home" theory then the 300WM is going to be a better choice. Short action rifle I would go for the 300 WSM, obviously. There is no real difference in performance on animals between the WM and WSM.

Depends what rifle you are looking at, really.

Or 30-06.

Just buy a 300H&H. You're kinda old school anyways. :)

I think of the 300H&H as an 30-06 (+P), which really isn't a bad place to be.

Agree... it makes sense for Phil to rock the H&H.

true. and i forgot we had a 300hh as well and it shot well with the old 220 grains silvertip. i killed a red deer with it and my wife killed her first black bear in quebec with it. i liked the form of the brass. never attracted in 375hh but in 300hh yes. another option.

I have had a 300 WSM for several years. Have loaded for both the 300 wsm and the 300 win mag. With 180 grain bullets you gain approx 100 fps. I much prefer the wsm only because it comes in a shorter, lighter platform. To gain that extra 100 fps for ex with RL22 you need to add about an extra 5 grains of powder. If one reloads I find that wsm casings don't last as well as the 300 mag. Just my lowly 2 cents.
