I have a M&P 2.0. It's fine but it shoots low and I'm not a fan of completely covering the target with the front sight.
Today at the range, I asked to shoot someone's Shadow 2. Damn, was it nice. I now feel an urgency to replace my M&P. Unfortunately, the price of the Shadow 2 is too high for me.
Can you guys recommend a handgun to replace my M&P that has nice ergonomics and good reliability but is costs less than $1k?

Put an optic on your m&p

Sell it to fund a shadow 2

Buy a shadow 1 on the EE, good deals on those (sub $800) come around pretty regularly

You're on a strict budget? Are you sure that you want to replace your M&P? Are you sure that what you really want isn't a just a new set of sights?

If I were you, I'd get some new sights. (Among others, you might consider Ameriglo, Dawson, Heinie, Warren, and Vogel.)

The M&P is ok, but its a budget gun. Its basically the ford fiesta where a glock is the toyota yaris. You save money on both by not paying for bells and whistles but with the fiesta you are giving up that solid reliability. Used shadow 1's go for 700-800 which would fit your needs. I'd say sell the smith and wait for a good deal to pop up.

You are certainly not giving up “ solid reliability “ with an M&P. The best handgun shooter I know personally runs nothing but M&P handguns, is a master class shooter and has over 100k rounds thru a couple of his guns. M&P’s are as dependable as ANY gun on the planet period,,,,and I’m a Glock guy not an M&P fanboy by any means.
OP, the only thing you need is sights :)

I put an optic on my M&P Gen 1, I have a new love for it.

Don't dump it, work with what you have.

I've already replaced the front sight to make it more visible. I may have made the problem worse. Here's the current setup:

Can the front sight go any lower?
I measured the height of the front sight (top of sight to top of slide) to be approx 0.181 inches.
I was looking at the 0.125 inch tall sight from Dawson (https://www.freedomventures.ca/products/dawson-front-sight-sw-mp). Will that make the difference?

Looking quickly at some CGN banner advertisers, here are some links to sight set options (that would fix your issue):

Personally, were I you, I'd probably try to find the particular set I preferred (which, in my case, might be Heinies or Warrens).

1) Did it shoot low BEFORE you changed the front sights?

2) Did you replace the front sight with a sight of the same height as the original?

3) Dropping .06 will make a difference but are you just guessing at the proper height correction? You'll need to calculate the required drop.

P.S. Most M&P's shot low for me right out of the box (I've owned 3 in the past) so I avoid them all together, YMMV. The Shadow 1 is a great gun and they're always available on the EE, wait for a good deal.

P.P.S. Who bubba'd the current aftermarket sight on that M&P? lol. Brass, wood, plastic, padded vice...these are your non-marring friends!

Yes.

I don't know.

Can you help me calculate the required drop?

Me. I had a very hard time getting the new sight to budge.

Yes.

I don't know.

I love the honesty.

Use this tool (or something similar) to calculate the required front sight height: https://dawsonprecision.com/sight-calculator/

Shoot supported, be deliberate and get good shots on paper. No sight will fix shooter error so take your time.

Next time LIGHTLY file/sand the sights base to reduce (but not completely eliminate) some resistance before you go smashing it into the dovetail, lol. I've installed several sights myself, constant fitting and a bunch of patience are required.

OK. I went to the range this evening and shot from a rest at targets at 6, 9, 12, and 16 yards. 10 shots at each target. I aimed such that the front dot was completely covering the bullseye. I was shooting Winchester 115 grain FMJ. Here's what I got:
Warm up at 6 yards:

9 yards:

12 yards (twice):

16 yards:

I then shot the 6 yard target again:

I noticed that I was flinching and tried to control it. I also noticed that I was shooting much better when I only released the trigger until it reset and then squeezed it again. If I let the trigger release all the way, the gun wobbles and by the time it fires, I'm way off target. I also seem to shoot much better if I bring the gun up quickly and fire rapidly (instinctively).
So anyway, is this gun shooting low? Will I benefit from replacing the front site with a shorter one? If so, how do I calculate how short it needs to be?
Is it even possible to tell, with my terrible groups, if the gun is shooting low?
