Hey just wondering if anyone here has had to deal with Smith and Wesson for warranty repairs or replacement?

Long story short, My brother bought a brand new Model 29-10 from a dealer here in Alberta. He bought the revolver got it home and waited for the registration certificate. Got the certificate, cleaned the revolver before its first range trip and while cleaning it, he noticed a crack in the frame underneath where the barrel threads into the frame. He took the gun back to the store, and now he’s been waiting over a month and hasn’t heard anything about it. He called the gun shop and they basically said haven’t heard anything.

I know these things take time, but You would think after a month You might hear something back considering its brand new and unfired. Smith and Wessons quality control should have caught that crack in the frame. But as we all know sometimes manufacturers quality control is bad.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue or similar issues with Smith and Wesson? My brother is a little pissed considered he’s new to handguns and a 6.5” model 29 is his dream revolver. He ended buying a 29-2 so he has one to shoot until the warranty issue is resolved.

Thanks Everyone!

Seems to me the dealer should be giving him another new gun without cracks or a refund. Gun was unfired so they should take that one back and let them deal with S&W.

Many years ago, I bought a brand new semi auto .22 rifle and when i got it home, I noticed the bolt assembly had many small cracks in it. I immediately packed it up and took it back to the dealer who offered to give me another one. Trouble was when we looked the other new guns over, 7 out 10 he had also had the same cracks. At that point, I lost interest in that particular make of gun but he gave me a store credit which I applied to a CZ 452 and never looked back.

It is sad to see how S&W QC has slipped so badly in recent years.

Well i agree, the store had a couple more in stock, so they should have just gave my brother another one. But here we are. I have heard of a few stores giving people refunds or another new gun in situations like this. Hopefully it doesn’t take two years like stated above....

Which store?

Sadly not the first problem with the metallurgy on a 29-10 that I've heard about. I've gone through a few current gen 629s however and they have been flawless. At various points in the past, I believe the QA/QC has been worse than it is currently. Unfortunately we don't have Murray Charlton any longer to do the warranty work.

It was Red Deer Shooting Centre.

Yeah I believe many people have had issues with Newer Smith and Wessons. But there has also been plenty of good ones.

I can see it being a metallurgy issue. The way it cracked leads me to believe that the area was to hard. Its a clean crack, so it split when the barrel was torqued into position. The frame is also very thin under the barrel. Compared to my single action BFR it’s paper thin lol.

This definitely makes me hesitant to buy a Smith and Wesson. I really wanted to get a 500 S&W magnum. But I think Ill buy another BFR.

Also watching Kentucky Ballistics torcher test Smith and Wesson they seem to do just fine. Again there’s lots of videos and pictures of them blowing up. Kinda like the one on EE a month or so ago.

New Smith’s are like bic lighters. Once they stop working, you throw them away and buy another brand:p My last two S&W 500’s were POS. Older Smith’s should last a lifetime if not abused.

Several years ago when Murray Charlton was still in business I had a new S&W Model 48-7 with a cracked frame. He sent it off to S&W in the US for replacement and it was a two year wait before I got it back.

I would keep that 29-2 , that is a great vintage.
But a brand new gun should just be exchanged ,if there is another one in stock.

Iam really curios about how the last 2 SW 500s were POS ?

I have one with several thousand ronds thru her and it's never skipped a beat.

Back to the OP, Gun warranties are virtually non existent in Canada, I learned this many times over, sad and unfortunate

I recently attempted a S&W warrantee claim.

Bought a new S&W SS 686 a couple months ago from a forum sponsor and when it arrived by courier, it had a small crack in the Altamont wood grips. The retailer didn't have any replacement grips in stock and I was referred to the new S&W warantee centre, being another site sponsor Wolverine Supply. They requested I ship the brand new revolver to them under a warantee claim and I was told that if the grips were in stock (which was unlikely) it would be a 3 week turnarond, but if they needed to order the OEM grips, it could be a 8-12 month wait. For a cracked grip.

I said screw it and bought new grips so I wouldn't be without my new gun for up to a year.
*Nothing against Wolverine; in fact, their communication was top notch!

Unfortunately in Canada we are pretty much on our own in regards to warranties. We either wait forever or have to pay for a replacement ourselves. I recently needed a slide stop spring for my S&W victory and was told it would be 4 to 6 months and that the gun would have to be sent in for the part to be installed. I located the part in the states for 2.25 and had a family member in the states order it and send it to me. Took 3 weeks.

The one in my avatar a PC was great for about 3000 rounds. One day during shooting I couldn’t get the cylinder to rotate...wtf? The barrel liner that is in the shroud loosen under all that recoil and backed itself onto the cylinder, ie, no cylinder gap. Ok #### happens no problem, off to Murray Charlton. When I picked it I checked the cylinder gap when I got home, he set it to .012 WHAT, the gun came from the factory .005 gap. I call him, yep factory now recommended the larger gap?

The second I bought was a 6.5 in 500 non Performance Centre model, failed to fire two to three times per cylinder load..geez off to Murray again He worked his magic and off to the races. Ok maybe POS is too harsh but I never had an issue with the Freedom Arms .454 or 500 Wyoming Express over the years. Just has to tighten the frame screws on those occasionally. I called Smith and Wesson state side and they said if the gun ever blow up they would replace it:confused::rolleyes::( ok..I guess.,whatever. I say I’m in Canada, can’t remember what he told me. Anyway not trashing the brand, love my 41, 52 and the many others I owned over the years, however since Murray has retired, I personally look for vintage over new production. YMMV

I've been waiting since July 2020 for replacement of a cracked slide for a 5" Pro C.O.R.E. The Canadian warranty centre ordered the replacement in September. It still hasn't shipped from S&W.

It’s interesting that most issues take years to solve warranty issues with Smith and Wesson. We definitely get the shaft here in Canada. But then You get companies like Shadow Systems when there’s a warranty issue they step up quickly and try to make it right, right away. There was that tread started about a broken frame on a Shadow Systems 918, and Shadow Systems contacted the owner and said they would ship him a new frame ASAP. Thats good customer service if You ask me!

That was me. Here is the thread that I started. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...adow-System-MR918L-elite-accessory-rail-broke .

Here is the quick version. I had an issue with my Shadow System frame. One quick phone call to Texas followed up with an email that included photos is all that it took. They were super apologetic and amazing to deal with.
I have never dealt with any firearms manufacturer directly that even came close to to Shadow Systems. Normally Canadians are left to fend for themselves or deal with an approved warranty repair shop not directly with the manufacturer.
Shadow Systems prides itself on customer service and it certainly shows. Within 1 week the new frame was sent to their exporter who in turn sent it to North Sylva the Canadian distributor to be registered and then sent to me. The entire process from the initial phone call to having the new frame in my hand was 6.5 weeks.
