hey - anyone know of a gunsmith willing to work on the hk sl8? i want to get the barrel threaded but it is a pita to get off (something about the melting temp of the loctite used to secure the barrel being very close to the melting temp of the receiver). i've talked to a few in the edmonton area but they're all very wary. thanks.

Try TacOrd? if they haven't done it? I'm sure they have the resources to figure out if they can?

The biggest issue is having the barrel nut wrench. There are a few of them around the various shops. Calgary Shooting Centre has done the work for a few customers.
I did my own and it wasn't that big of a deal. Proper torque values should be observed when re-installing the barrel.

Ok the barrel wrench is only a small part of the process. The most important part is having a mandrel to hold the barrel extension inside the receiver to then use the barrel wrench to take the barrel nut off.

If you try to hold the polymer receiver in a vice and simply just use a barrel nut wrench you are flirting with disaster. This is want the mandrel does, goes inside of the receiver and locks into the barrel extension lugs of the barrel, holds it tight and then you can work on the nut. The plastic receiver is then left out of the equation. The mandrel is just a long rod that will stick out the back of the empty receiver and the end can be locked into a vice.

With these two items working on and changing barrels is very, very safe and easy. Going with just a barrel nut wrench (done by some people very carefully) you risk breaking the plastic receiver.

just a follow-up. rifle back from ian an herron. work is terrific; i highly recommend. cost more to ship it back and forth than the actual work. took off 1.5" or so; still as accurate as it was. procomp surefire on the end now; matches the bull barrel perfectly.

here's a pic; still waiting for my g36k handguard and a cqb grip so that i can get the weight back as far as possible ...

thanks, appreciate it. my attempt to make a NR race gun out of a dmr (ie, not trying to make a g36 clone). spuhr magwell to get the mag catch where it is supposed to be, and to be able to run 10-round mags (with ranger plates so that i can grab them out of the pouch faster). hera top rail so that i can get at the bolt handle faster, and to get the rail as close to the bore axis as possible and reduce parallax at close range. cut the barrel at 18.6" to shed some weight, then put it back in with a comp for faster follow-up shots. tommybuilt flat trigger to get the trigger group as good as it's going to get. hera pistol grip adaptor to get the LOP as short as possible, and put some weight at the back to balance it out a bit (it'll always be a heavy gun, but i'd rather the heavy be further back).

running a kahles rd in the scout position (my pc9 and m305 are also set up as scouts) and the back rail is waiting for a 5x magnifier (a chinesium one; i don't think magnifiers need to be quality glass for running and gunning). had to search to find a low flip-away mount, but sun optics make one that does the job (have one on my pc9 as well, as it also has low mount optics on it). no problems mounting the magnifier 12" from the red dot; works just fine.

were they willing to turn the profile down to a more pencil profile barrel?

didn't ask. i figured that would be too much for the hk purists and there would be a lynching ...

actually, just didn't think to ask.

I would like to see how much weight I can scrub off the gun with a pencil profile barrel, potential future project for me. Incidentally what trigger is that? And how much did it improve the pull over the stock?

i think it is tommybuilt - i got it from rks usa; not sure any in stock any more. i'm not sure it changes pull so much as ergonomics and leverage; it 'feels' better. doesn't even have the pin on the one side for the second spring too. doesn't feel any lighter (i DO NOT trust my trigger scale) but short take-up and clean break. very predictable.
