OK, You asked for it ... What are the most overrated RIFLE cartridges?

the 45-70 is the most over rated cartridge.
Hard to shoot accuratly off hand.
Thumps you everytime with heavy loads.
I owned 2 of them
Double rifle and a lever action Marlin.
NOT REALLY ANY FUN TO SHOOT.

Cartridges are more alike than different. Anything that launches a 120gr bullet or larger from 2600 fps or faster is capable of great things when it comes to big game hunting. Most deficiencies are not the cartridges fault.
Exactly where I've settled. Over the years we've lost one bull elk in my small family/friends hunting group. He was poorly hit, with a 338WM.
I don’t really want to do the field testing on elk myself
It works just fine. ;)

So far I've taken Elk, Moose and Mule Deer with mine. And seen several more WT & MD killed by family and friends. I can't tell the difference in reaction from the 30-06 I used for years.

6.5 Creedmore - It's ok for pussy plinking but not a hunting cartridge.

300 and 338 RUM - They work, but these are for the insecure guys that need to say they have a big magnum. I had a 300 and liked it for elk and it was a great shooter, but my complaints about these cartridges is mostly about the operators and the potential for flinch or poor hold. Not many can control them enough to shoot accurately in the field.

Maybe the 45/70 isn t over rated but the skills of the people using it are lol

a 550 grains at 2150 or 2125 fps maybe not fun but i do not see the anemic 45/70 as hard to shoot and i found very accurate with any loads tested ... maybe it is just me ..

270, missed the mark with slow twist barrels. I would drop a 270 like a rabid weasel and pick up a 280 any day, with a faster twist, and better bullet selection. Thats just me though, no science behind it because I know a chit ton of critters have fallen to the 270, but it is overrated and the 280 beats it hands down.

Buckmastr has a beautiful Kimber of Oregon chambered in the 280 Remington, for sale on EE.
