Small, light, black bear and deer carbine?

I could never understand exactly why Marlin produced the Marauder for only one year of 1964.
Produce this trapper once again in 35 Remington and the company would probably still exist as stand alone entity.
Nor does FN- Winchester produce any 30-30 trapper ??

WTF

market is always right or wrong but producing something because you like it doesnt mean it will sell well

I like my plain Ruger scout in 308 with a 10rd mag of Barnes TSX or Partitions gives me plenty of confidence anywhere in the woods in AB.

Hard to beat a short lever action, this one is 13” chambered in .44 mag

Rossi Ranch Hand / Henry Mare’s leg in 44 magnum with a full stock. If you reload and the cartridges are legal for big game where you hunt, 45 colt can be loaded up to outperform the 44 magnum.

Totally agree. Folks using these little thumpers inside 80 yds can expect reliable, one shot take downs on heavy game that ain't aware of their presence. I be very content sneekin' the bush or workin' from a hide with my Rossi .45 Colt. Run hardcast boolits in weights ranging from 250-320 gr in either the .44 mag or
45 Colt & put the shot to the shoulders of the buggers to drop 'em.

The 300+ gr hardcast boolits of good design will easily go though the shoulders of our heaviest game (And livestock.) when launched at 1400-1500 fps.
They be the cat's ass fer me.

Sure, because you might have to beat it up just for the bolt to open.

Did a Mosin get the better of you? Lol. The M-38s I have cycle as smooth as silk. This one likes 165 gr Hornady Interlocks with 40.5 gr of IMR 4895. 20210605_142242.jpg

OP, if you accept that a 510 grain 458 Win mag into the foot will not be sufficient for a bear or a deer, and if you accept that a .22 Long Rifle behind the ear has taken both bear and deer in Canada, you have a pretty much LARGE selection for suitable arms and cartridges. Is pretty much all about you and your abilities, not the gear.

An older trapper fellow up here is totally proud and impressed with his .243 Win Ruger Compact - he takes multiple deer, bear, wolves, and moose with it every year. Not a hope of convincing him that there is a better rifle or cartridge available.

On the other hand, we have had 3 different black bears in the neighbourhood over past few days - two blacks and a cinnamon phase - my wife and dog had the smaller black one cross the road, while the "ladies" were taking their morning walk, in front of them within about 50 feet, and within 50 feet of our house, this morning. So beside me at my desk, I have a Mauser 9.3x62 and a sleeve of shells. So gotta pick the fights that you really want to get into, and when you are an old guy like me, tend to also want to win. Our 7 year old, 65 pound female Bulldog does not appear to think like that - very protective of my wife - so bear, strange dog or whatever is going to get charged - does not seem to consider possibility of "losing" a scrap - so Grandpa will need a good rifle, ready to bail her butt out of the situation that she likely created...

Short lever guns are all the rage now a days, I am also surprised neither company still makes them. I would definitely be willing to shell out for a 16" 336 in 35 Rem with a pistol grip.

Ah yes, those mythical "smooth as glass" mosins. We'll I'll bite:

There is nothing , except most suborn greed, that can make you choose M-28 mosin over cz 527 in 7.62x39. At any ranges you can actually use M-28, CZ would be better, for less recoil, better ammo, better bolt, better magazine, better handling, way better trigger, wide array of optic mounts, including very nice rear aperture. But I guess there are always some people who image enemy at the gates and take pleasure of manhandling 2x4 plank with a fireball an effective accuracy of a shotgun.

I won't put down a Mosin in fine shape. Ain't hard to tweek 'em a tad to suit one's needs. Had good results with my ones over the years.
Uber reliable rifles & they be accurate to boot. I dig 'em. :)
