OK, You asked for it ... What are the most overrated RIFLE cartridges?

I thought this was about guns not cartridges?

My mistake.....different thread.

Cartridges then. Probably a dozen capable.of everything in North America. Say 50 for everything except the great Bears and Bison.

A great deal could be the equivalent to 270......

708....7x57.....6.5x55....264wm.....280......etc...etc.

Many others when applied to 30 cal are effectively so close to 300 h&h in on game performance as to not matter.

308nm....300wsm....300wm....30-06...etc...etc.

Separate the marketing hype, choose according to if you reload or not, pick one. Go fill your freezer.

Pete, what you said about the 7X57 can be said about any cartridge, in the way for that any one, there is another that does something better. The issue is defining the better, or not. Endless combinations of ballistic gack can be spewed. FPS faster, fractions of an inch of drop, and so on.
To say that it is an emotional thing would be definitely correct. Not sure when it became so necessary for a fella to have to prove his choice, or worse yet, attempt to convince others that his particular choice is "better".
Add marketing hype, and the general basic human requirement to be "better" than the next guy, and then stir in an anonymous forum, and we get 21 pages of spew. Lots of fellas shoot what they shoot, because their Pa did, or because Jack O'Connor did, or because some dude on YouTube does. Does that make it "better"? Why can't they just shoot it, because it works for them, and they like it? That's plenty enough reason for most folks.

Unless specifically mentioning the 270, or the 30-06. One is the original marketing hype cartridge, and the other most shoot because they really don't any better. And neither does anything particularly well.

I agree with what you said, I'm just trying to make a point. I have no hate for any cartridge, new or old. You hear a lot of hate for the 270 and the 6.5 CM but nothing but love for the 7x57. Us gunnutz are a funny bunch! Truth is there aren't many bad choices out there. I have to admit, I have no love for the ultra mags. My personal choice for mule deer is a 270 due to the rifle it's chambered in.

I’m helping him up after he became overwhelmed at how useless my 30-06 is. He couldn’t believe I’d choose such a cartridge. Poor guy was really shook up about it.

I’m with you

Lethal? You bet, it will kill. But a charge stopping big bore it is not contrary to widespread popular opinion, and that’s why I agree on titling it the most overrated.

Yes, perhaps with the to the loads some of the older/earlier firearms are capable of handling. I have some mixed feelings though with that call when it comes to top end loads the likes of the 1895 Marlin and say, loads the Ruger No. 1 can handle.

I had an annoying know it all neighbor a few years ago that couldn’t help but add his two cents on anything, he saw me wearing an Ak t-shirt I got at the surplus store and said in his usual condescending tone, “I prefer the 500 nitro express...”

So I’m going with that, the 500 nitro express is the as overrated as my old idiot neighbor lol.

I know the feeling. Similar annoying acquaintance that keeps bad mouthing the 30-06 like God made him the authority on the subject. Cannot leave it alone. So I have two in his honour and keep killing with them with no fuss or fanfare. I think it makes him angry.

Charles...your goat, it seems to be here. It isn't wanted...Maybe you need the doll to point at now?

Go back and read again what was written. Maybe before you make the presumption that it's all about you (it isn't) or even all about me (it most definitely isn't) you should try and comprehend the message. The contradiction is there, it's really too bad you missed it.
The question was even asked, and you didn't answer. Shame, really.
You don't matter to me in the least, to make me angry. Amused, certainly, but not angry.
Can't speak to the fuss, but the fanfare is certainly there, right down to the hat, and the 308 pants...

stopping power is an interesting concept. i killed a charging black bear with an anemic 300 savage and factory 180 grains core lockt when they were at $20 a box of 20 rounds ... one shot end of the story ... that is stopping power lol ...

i would not use a 300 savage for elephant or a 45/70 for that matter but both can do the job: all we need is a cns hit.

that may lead to another thread on stopping power and the terminal effect of a caliber and specific bullet ...
