Best 100 SKS Group

I own quite few SKS rifles and have shot most of them at 100 yards several times. Groups run around 5-6".

I was shooting at 100 and a buddy asked if he could zero his SKS on one of the targets I had up at 100 yards. He had installed a new scope (Tasco 4X) and had just zeroed it (2" low) at 25 yards and wanted to fine tune it to a 100 yard zero.

I was watching through the scope on my rifle and told him he was missing, unless they were hidden in the black. Turns out that is where they were.

The SKS is a run of the mill Chinese. I bedded it and installed one of those angle-iron shaped scope bases that bolts onto the side of the receiver. A solid mount. clear of the receiver cover.

I have seen a few that most would call me a liar for. I have witnessed a 2.25moa average sks. That was with weight sorted surplus. Some of them dipped into 1.75” range and I seen two groups just over an inch. It was enough to more than impress me.

Best I’ve been able to do with one Russian that I’ve shimmed tight in the stock was 3.25”-3.5” @100y and 4.50” @200y, 5 shot groups with non corrosive norc white box and sst’s with iron sights I painted hiviz.

I've done a 2 inch group with a russian sks equipped with a 1-4 Voms Pilad scope using barnaul ammo
A 51 tula, one of the beaters that Wanstalls sold a few years back
Someone had told me once before that the Chinese sks were more accurate then the russians

The last time i shot Sasha (the one on the left) she patterned a (5) 5 shot group average of 2.8moa. Ive since made some bedding improvements and am interested to see how she fairs now... but havent had the time.

I'm making a stock/chassis for one of my sks rifles right now. Hoping to address some proper receiver bearing surfaces that most of the stocks out there lack.
Hopefully it means a measurable change in grouping but we'll see.

Ammo makes a big difference. A group reflects the capability of the ammo AND the capability of the rifle.

You can't test a rifle with poor ammo. To test the ammo grouping ability, I built a rifle with a heavy match grade barrel and a 20X target scope. I then shot a a variety of various ammo at 100 yards. Match bullets hand loaded would group under an inch. Milsurp ran 1.5 to 4".

My buddy's SKS that shot the nice group is this one:

he took that scope off and installed a 4X TAsco. Note that the scope base is a solid fixture.

considering the front sight post covers about 8" at 100 yards, you are shooting quite well.

Modifications to the irons on the sks would be a great thing for offhand shooting as that front post is for minute of man not minute of angle LOL
I saw some rear peep sight unit that mounted to the back of the receiver and I can;t seem to find it now. Was fully adjustable and looked pretty slick.
Be nice to mill off the SKS front sight , creating a dovetail that an M1/M14 front sight could be fitted to and run it with that rear mounted peep sight.

You are probably thinking of the Tech Sights TS-200, it's a rear aperture sight which replaces the receiver cover pin. I purchased one this Jan but have not yet had the opportunity to install it. A thinner front blade may be in order as well once I get it mounted. Had to order from the US, couldn't find any available in Canada.

My "shooter" SKS. Some cheap upgrades to the sights.

The rear sight is part cut off a Lee Enfield "L" sight. A cut was made in the cover and the sight brazed in place. Rock solid.

Note that the receiver cover pin has been replaced with a 1/4" bolt. Now the cover is solid.

I replaced the front sight post with a crosshair.

For fine shooting, I use the crosshair. For fast shooting, I just put the target inside the ring. Works well.

It was done with a case of Barnul (Russian) milsrp ammo he got from me, 15 years ago. Headstamp is 47A

Ganderite, thanx for posting those pics. Nice mod and looks like a possible way to go. I can do that work... I was also going to replace that rear pin with a threaded alternative.

gyrates92..... thanx for the info... and yes I think it was a tech sights unit now that you mention it.

mods i might do.... only because I'm bored and all the other rifles I would take on for projects right now are banned..... sad ain't it
-mill the front sight off and create a dovetail for an M1A bush rifle front sight
-Possibly buy the tech sights rear sight unit
-threaded bolt to replace the receiver cover pin* hopefuly this will work with the tech sight
-also going to get rid of the spring unit that locks the trigger group at the rear. I want to replace that with a bolt in unit. Will require a bit of modification but should be a simple upgrade and it's something I've wanted to do for years but haven't got around to it.

In the package for the sight there is a screw provided to replace the receiver cover pin, it seems like a well thought out unit.

This is the only mod I would do to a shooter grade SKS, apart from possible shimming of the stock.
