After speaking with a gun smith, I am thinking about re-boring a stainless heavy barrel Vanguard to 416 Remington, any reason not to?

I would say get a new barrel, at least you can switch back when or if you realize the 416 is too much, depends on what your used to shooting now.
Why not go straight to a .458 WM better choice of bullets, and it kills better.

At present it is a 300 WM, I have two, the biggest calibre I have shot is a few different 375s, one was a 375 H and H in an X bolt so quite light. I am quite certain recoil will not be a problem.

Any particular reason for 416?

This from someone in both bores. Both .....bores, not particular caliber. Any projectile 》》.338 is expensive. 375 projectile and brass is much more common, projectile has many more choices. Cast bullets with trailboss or 4198 is realistic in 375, some smaller jacketed bullets are available. My Rigby is commonly $4/ for x fired brass, but its not for sale.

Realistically life begins at 40, really so does recoil....although un braked my 375 rum was there as well. My first 375 was a H&H in a Interarms Mark X......which is a rebadged Zastava.....cheap, I see them from time to time, accurate, and a big rolling boom as compared to the sharp crack of a 300. Believe the term is recoil velocity....my Rum had both felt ft/lbs and velocity until braked.

Its been my experience that a used non magnum often has lots of use, many magnums have very little. People shoot a box or two, don't like the recoil, it sits for years until sold at a deep discount.

Ramblings.....anyways

That being said. I have the 416 Rigby Cz550 100 grains 7828 and it recoiled uncomfortably for me. I installed a 1 lb. Mercury recoil reducer in the stock. That tamed it down. I shot another's 416 Ruger guide gun with muzzel brake and i liked it alot. It fit well, relatively light, and managed recoil well. Good luck with what you decide- it's all fun

Why not 416 CT? Less work

Bob Jury is quick to respond on Facebook and will let you know if you have enough barrel with some quick measurement

Fast turn over too

What chambering is it now? Not sure what how long a vanguards mag box is. 416 CT or 416 ruger might be a better option. You need bore diameter plus 1/4” to rebore.

it is a 300 wm, 416 Remington is 3.6" same as 375 H and H so Vanguard magazine should be just long enough.

Maybe someone has a vanguard in 375 and a long action and they can comment if the mag is modified. That could open up a whole world of stainless easy to scope long action magnums with minimal work.

If it can’t be rebored are you going to get a barrel off him? They are very good if you haven’t tried them.

Ron Smith will do a re-bore in 416 rem mag

Did Bob Jury suggest him? He did the same for me once for a barrel contour, have you respect that in a craftsman

No, I searched re-bore in the Gunsmith forum and those were the only two names I found, I messaged Bob Jury on Facebook and phoned Ron Smith. Read nothing but good things about both gentlemen here and online.
