Schwaben Arms

Yeah I thought that too …….but its like anything newly constructed, semi auto only, different name …… no relation to their military cousins except looks ……

Repost, but last time around KevinB did agree that next time he found himself in Frankfurt with a few spare hours he would go check them out and tell us how thier quality was...:D and thier 'sniper' rifle is obviously allowed, and frankly I would love to see someone try and challenge the firearms lab with one of these, as Germany has equally, if not even more stringent laws, and SA has managed to get around them with thier 'mods'.

If they are willing to say there guns arent a variant of the HK91 or G3 maybe there is a chance, Doubt it though, some reason they really get scared of ak's and HK's with the rcmp.

Unfortunately its a banned variant of the 12(5) Hk stuff
-- unless my German translations are wrong they are claiming them to be civilian variants...

They're saying that the modified, newly manufactured SAR's will not accept the G3 internals and that the entire platform is based on the HK41. The HK41 is very similar to the prohib HK91...

"...the prohib HK91..." The H&K 91 is a civilian version of the G3. Prohibited just the same.
The Mauser copies aren't though.

It's quite funny to stumble over a thread on Schwabenarms on CGN .
I visited their "factory" about a week and a half ago and talked to one of the owners.
As I'm intending to buy a .308 semi-auto within the next months, I had a close look on their G3 look-a-likes.
The overal quality of the rifle looks good. Finish is either phosphated or platiccoated. (I would prefer the phosphated version.) The trigger is way smoother (3-4 lbs) than the G3-triggers I remeber from the German army G3s.
You can choose between a steel or plastic lower, plastic is standard. Stocks and handguards are available in a lot of different designs. The barrel is a match-grade Lothar-Walther barrel, so accuracy should be OK.

I think the maybe interesting facts for you Canadians are the following:
Even though Schwabenarms declares that their M41 modell is a clone of the HK41, that's not 100% correct. Current German gun laws wouldn't allow a pruduction of the HK41 today. A semi-auto rifle mustn't be capable of being converted into a full-auto without the excessive use of special machinery (ie by simply switching parts).
So the M41 is modified in several ways. There are some weldings in the upper, that make it impossible to insert a G3 fa bolt or bolt carrier. The M41 lacks the holes for the front pivot pin. It's impossible to attach a standard G3 lower. There is a block in the M41 lower at the spot of the auto sear axis, so it's not possible to insert a standard G3 trigger group (without removing the auto sear).
All these modifications from the original design had to be approved by the firearms lab of the federal German Police. (That's what they call BKA Freigabebescheid = letter of compliance on their website.)
I don't know if these modification are sufficient to comply with canadian gun laws, but I allways thought our's were way stricter.
Or is simply the looks of a G3 that make a rifle prohibited in Canada?

Hope this information is of any help.

Chris

Its what the gun is based off of that decides if a gun is prohibited. If they said this is there proprietary design then they could sell in Canada. If they say they based there gun after the G3, HK41, HK91, then the gun is prohibited by association. I actually got into guns because as a kid I wanted a HK91/G3, only to find out the gun I idolized as a kid was prohibited.

Are there any standardized regulations on how different the design has to be from the original? For example the Sig550 is prohibited but the PE90 seems to be available in Canada. In Germany it's the original barrel that makes the PE version of the 550 a prohibited weapon, so Sig Sauer now produces a version with a civilian made barrel and we are good to go.
