Looking to acquire a pistol for use by myself and my partner. I've got medium sized hands, but hers are really small.
Are there any compact pistols out there easy for her to handle, yet comfortable enough for me to grip?
Thanks.
Hi Kimble
Depends.....are you using this for a shooting sport like IPSC, or are you generally more interested in regular target shooting?
If you're doing basic target shooting for fun or plinking then you may be able to get away with any standard double stack pistol as long as you're okay with shifting your grip so that your trigger finger rests in a good position. You can do a lot with your off hand to make sure the gun doesn't pop out of your grip, and if you aren't under time pressure then quick follow up shots aren't much of a consideration.
If that's the case then you might want to go with well known comfortable pistol like a CZ 75, it's a DA/SA but you can ignore the DA mode and treat it like a SA only gun. Another option might be a S&W M&P if you prefer a striker fired pistol. The ergo's on the M&P series are top notch. There's plenty of after market support for both pistols so you could swap all kinds of things, even triggers, mag releases, slide releases etc etc.
The Browning 1911 in 380 R.J.Medals mentioned is amazingly small, I got to handle one at a gun store and it's really tiny, might be a perfect fit for your partner. If you're okay with a 380 then the Bersa might be a good fit too.
If you're shooting in a timed event like IPSC then grip i.e. recoil management and follow up shots become more important. You're also mostly limited to 9mm, so a 380 is likely out. In that case the G48 is really hard to beat for people with medium or small hands. It's the smallest 10 round 9mm on the market in Canada. The triggers are...well.....they're Glock triggers so that's not great, but the compromise is worth it (and that can be changed depending on the sport/division you're shooting in).
A m1911 could be a winner too, but the grip is a little unusual as it's sized for a 45ACP. It's thin but long, and may not work for you. I find that I can hook my fingers around the front strap of the grip and it provides a good surface for my short fingers, but if your hand is smaller than mine then it could be an issue.
