What do you think of this story...

of course the distance is exaggerated. There is a tiny weeny chance that this guy can shoot like that.I understand there are some good shots out there, but 600 ain't likely. 300yds with a hunting rifle, maybe, but even then.......

I'd love to see a friendly 600 yard off-hand shoot-off between all of us here.

At a 4x8 sheet of plywood.

ill do yea one better 1042 yards at the tweedsmuir park rod and gun clubs standing gong and its hit every year time and time again, yes we do practice at it as well as BR it, I also know alot of guys cant judge distance but those would be the guys I hunt with , I cant judge soemone I dont know or have ever met shooting ability, it was his own property or family property (added after the initial story) , kind of a + there at knowing distances.

its not a question of whether or not the distance is exaggerated... its a case of whether or not the shooter simply BS'ed where he was standing when he took the shot... this isnt a case of mis judged distance...

the opinion of many is that offhand for a guy who hasn't shot a box worth of rounds in 2 years of hunting is that he is full of crap...

I wasn't able to get home and grab the rest before dark so I tried a couple shots off the hood of my truck, for the life of me I cant hit a sheet of plywood at that distance (GPS'ed 540 meters) with any accuracy at all... but I can hit it ...

So now knowing what to expect...Im going to call him out and have him prove it... I think the safe bet is going to be a hundred dollars, offhand 600 yards, he has to hit a 2x4 foot piece of plywood mounted horizontally...a fair size target for a guy who can hit a doe in the neck at 600 yards... if he hits it, I'll give him the hundred bones and he gets to claim the all time best shooter at the bar badge...

Hmm well savage rifle thats good bushnell scope also good i like the sounds of it but if he is like you say it does not add up, luck maybe?

Doesn't sound like he is saying he can do it shot after shot... Just said he did it... 600 yards is do-able with the 06.. Take his word for it.... just recognize that he was extremely lucky... a fact that he will admit.. The only bad thing with this is he will probably try another hail mary shot thinking he can repeat it.. only to discover that he can't, and may end wounding the animal or having it careen off somewhere and do some other unexpected damage..

I don't see what the big deal is?Anyone with half a clue knows it was pure BS luck.Even an accomplished, well practised, long range target shooter would admit to being extremely lucky to hit a live deer at a guesstimated 600+/- yards offhand,or even from a solid rest for that matter without knowing the precise distance, crosswind etc.:sucks:.

A sheet of plywood is 4X8! And still if I could see it I probably could hit a 2X4 sheet.

So, while standing, shooting a 30-06 rifle offhand, with a 3 x 9 x 40 Bushell scope mounted, you could hit a 2' x 4' sheet of plywood, at 600+ yards, with a single shot. If you can do that with any kind of consistency, I would definetly be willing to give you the big "attaboy". Somehow, I don't think its gonna happen. Even if you had the rifle sighted in for that yardage, somehow I think that would be unlikely, seeing as most people sight in for 150 - 200 yards, not having to factor in hold over would take some of the difficulty out of the shot, 600 yards is a looonnnngggg friggen way to shoot offhand, and hit what you were aiming at, especially deer sized game, let alone an Elephant!

At my old store it was 150 yards across the widest section, laser rangefinded. Every single hunter that ever came in to see a scope or a rangefinder always insisted it was at least 200-300 yards across until I told them to laser it and check.
