20 or 28 gauge?

Factory 20 g target shells are signifigantly cheaper to buy than 28 g shells.

I've shot trap with 12 16 20 28 and .410 My best score is with a 12 of course but I have the most fun with a 28 gauge.
Only drawback is as others have said is the cost of 28 ammo.

Given the choice, I’ll shoot a 28 before a 20 any day but the cost of ammo is a different story altogether.

I would expect most times that the 28 gauge is cheaper to reload, if your re-loads is what you shoot in all gauges. Many do not find any benefit in reloading for 20 or 12 for sure - with good reason. I doubt there is any discount, or "promo" 28 gauge made by anyone?? The BPI book has multiple 28 gauge loads for 7/8 ounce and one ounce, which would be pretty much identical component cost to the standard 20 gauge load. I think standard 28 gauge with 3/4 ounce of shot would be a smidgeon cheaper to reload than one ounce 20 gauge - but only about the cost of the shot used - not sure that powder or wads or hulls amount to much difference??

I only reload 28 and 16 guage. 12 and 20 aren’t worth the trouble for the cost savings and I don’t shoot enough 410 to justify the press.
Don't see that many for sale because we all love them and are keeping them safely under wraps until sanity returns to this country

Certainly one of the problems with 28 gauge, if buying anything remotely vintage, is the insane pricing that is based on rising demand and very limited supply. Take two guns, American or Continental, from the same maker, similar grade and condition, one a 12 and one a 28. The 28 will be 4 times the price of the 12.
In a nutshell that’s it. Also a bit less recoil for folks who are either younger and getting into shooting or older and have dimples where their shoulders used to be lol! A big thing for me was cost and availability of ammo in a wide range of loads. You used to be able to walk into most stores and a case of 20 target for $70 just as the pandemic started now happy to get a case for $80-90, all prices before tax. Granted 12 is more popular but 20 is a close second.

- Than again, using the same reasoning a 12G would probably make more sens.

With this out of the way, what will the gun be used for? And what's your end goal?
- For hunting purposes (unless you are shooting doves inSouth-America) the cost of ammo used any given years will kind of be a moot point. (a few boxes of 12g won't be all that much cheaper than a few boxes of 20g, than a few boxes of 28g)
- If you looking for something to pass down to your children, a 12G will be cheaper than a 20G, and the 20G will be much cheaper than a 28G...
- If you found a good deal on a quality 28G... why not give it a try!
