Why are .410 slugs so rare?

Anyone know why it is so hard to find.410 slugs? I've been looking everywhere for them. So far only managed to find three 5 she'll boxes from a small store in Quebec. Even big stores like Cabela's don't have any.

I want to use my .410 at an indoor range but they only allow slugs.
 
shortage right now and out of the 4 manufacturers that responded to me, only one mentioned 410 and it was 7 and 8 target loads.

3 mentioned trying to get what they can out the door without mentioning slugs.


my goal / suggestion is to purchase 000 buck pellets and load single projectiles into hulls to make my own slug rounds
 
I would say not many stores would stock them... expensive to start with and really quite useless. I doubt many 410 shooters use them...
 
410 Foster slugs lack the necessary penetration for big game hunting .... and in many provinces they aren't even legal for big game hunting ....

And 410 Brenneke slugs (which would have better penetration) are not imported into Canada ..... :-(

With that ... there isn't a big market for them here ...

I definitely agree they are not very practical or useful. But I live in Toronto so no outdoor ranges around and with the slug rule at the ranges I go to the .410 slugs are my only option. Just surprised they are so rare but it does make sense.
 
.45 Colt has the same base as a .410 shell and some (but not all!) .410 guns can take a .45 round. That could be a sensible option for putting a single piece of lead downrange.
 
Spotted this thread and it brought to mind a few .410 'goodies' I picked up at the gun show in Duncan a few years back. Three loose Imperial purple paper case slug shells and a pack of five red paper case buckshot loads by Olin Corporation. All 2 1/2" loads. The buckshot loads are marked for use in pistols chambered for the .45 Colt/.410.
 
A friend of mine gave me these last winter. I thought they were pretty neat.

I'd have to say they aren't that useful. I bought 5-6 boxes and I still have most of them lying around. Let me know if you want them, we could work out a deal lol

The .410 is now my son's gun and he shots exclusively 2.5" #7.5 out of them. I have no use for .410 slugs.

The only 3" slugs I've seen were the Russian Brown Bear ones in zinc cases.A bean can is toast at 50 yards.I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer with one were it legal or in a survival situation.
 
A good friend of mine filled his tag yearly with a 410 loaded with slugs. They work quite well if placed thru both lungs. Out right flatten coons and coyotes.
Anyone saying they are useless hasnt used them or doesnt possess the skills to use them correctly.

I recall a guy on a Sask hunting forum mentioning that his son/young nephew? used one for bear hunting over bait, and apparently it worked on a small bear at close range. I guess useful is determined by the OP's needs, not by anyone else. I made some watered down loads that are basically the 9 mm Flobert with a different body...very useful to me but for others probably not so much.

I rather like my 9mm flobert. Wont kill a squirrel at 7 yards with the #10 shot but i have some #8s to try

Brybenn, what kind of 410 slugs was your friend using?

  • Foster slugs?
  • Brennekes?
  • Round balls?
  • Cast boolits/Reloads?
