Jard/Sylvestre J180 Info, Feedback, and Builds

What's the deal with Jard - it seems that they never met a corner they wouldn't make square. Aesthetics are seemingly beyond them, how about a hand guard rail that is on the same plane as the upper's rail, it isn't that tough. I'd love to try one of their products, but seriously, rail heights are an issue? Not terribly confidence inspiring.

I am an enthusiast for information about modular rifles of all kinds, including the SBI LPC, Lynx lower and soon upper, the Kodiak WK180-C, Wolverine WS/X MCR, MRA Renegade/Maverick, and the Jard J180. I find the J180s true direct impingement operation fascinating in particular, and am looking forward to see how it performs long term against the 180 piston designs. I'm also very enthusiastic about the SBI direct impingement BCG, and am looking forward to how they function in their complete, non-"brick like" Lynx complete firearms.

Thanks Ustauk, I hope my question came across the right way.

I would love to see 180 platforms reach AR15 levels of quality, I really hope the new players on the market make this a reality.

In fairness how many people actually use the top rail of their hanguard?

I've literally only seen one example which was a guy with a IR laser.

Torches, bipods etc. Who cares if it's 4mm lower?

Seriously what would you be doing differently with your jard if it lined up? I might be wrong but red dots and magnifiers normally remain on the receiver rail as do scopes

You sound like the perfect candidate for the SBI Lynx. Their WK/MCR Lynx lower is already out, and they are developing an upper they intend to be svelte and have a in spec and presumably continuous rail. It will be released using a piston first, but will eventually have a direct impingement optional BCG, being impinged from a gas tube, like the J180.

You may want to also have a look at True North Arms enhanced WK upper and lower, which are again svelter then the J180, and also have the straight cut magwell.

Finally, Spectre LTD has its svelte lower available for the WK and MCR.

It's been interesting to watch John at Wolverine's getr' done farm equipment rifle evolve aesthetically as the market expanded. The J180 aesthetic definitely leans back towards the farm implement aesthetic, even more so then the original WK.

The use of a gas tube instead of the piston allows use of lower profile handguards, but the receiver height still has to accommodate the dual return springs and guide rods. Has anyone tried a piston height accommodating hand guard with the J180 to see if the rail on the handguard then is the same height as the receiver rail portion?

Back up iron sights.

I am not disagreeing with you but,,,

I originally got into the J48s only because a store was selling them off for about a third the price as parts. I thought the idea of a DI recoil system combined with a rail and spring return system was pretty novel. Full credit to Jard, especially at a time when the options in Canuckistand were diminishing by the week.

The J180 seems to be quite the refinement over those 48s.

Did you see the bullpup 9mm they made? Looked like the wooden 'guns' I made as a kid - "here's a 2x4, if I put a handle on it, it's a rifle".

Yes, dammit! I wanted one of those….
As blocky as they are, I think it looked more intentional in design rather than just under thought-out like this one.

No, I handled one - there was little/no thought to a human being using one. Top heavy and ...well.....rectangular in profile with no attempt made to spend even 25 cents on ergonomics. They sucked to handle.

Pretty happy with everything. The gun ran really well with some EWG on the contact points in the receiver and some lube in the carrier. No real complaints about fit/finish. With no optic and an empty cross mag it’s just under 6 pounds.

Looks great! The folding stock and handguard (carbon fibre?) compliment the J180 nicely. Below are Wind of Pain's comments from his Reddit post of the pictures and the pictures in-thread:

A few failures to feed/failures to lock back on empty, but that’s not something that is abnormal for a brand new gun… especially a rig you string together with random parts. After about 60 rounds everything was gravy! My only real complaint is just that the rail height is extra high so milspec 12oclock position pic rail sits low in relation to the rail on the receiver. My safety selector and trigger fit in without issue. Safety is a very positive tight fit. Bolt and action is very smooth and in my opinion the charging handle is a great size with nice texturing.

All in all it felt like I was building an AR type rifle, and I’m pretty happy with the gun. It sparked much joy.

SIG MCX. Most of the better 1913 type folding stocks I have seen are all for either the MPX or the MCX. Very solid, well engineered.
