My first semi auto.22....Ruger, or ???

OP - something to consider - there are lots of 10/22s on the EE, at all levels of mods and that could save you hundreds on 'parts'.

Both good choices. I have a few 1022s and like them. I don`t have an A22 (YET) . I would go with the A22 some reasons why- price $350 for the standard model and currently have a $50 mail in rebate, they seem like a bigger rifle, trigger is better without upgrading, I find the stock 1022 trigger too heavy. Also you can get 25 round mags for them which might be a plus for you.

I would be very sceptical about savages mail in rebates. I bought a savage that qualified for the rebate but they denied it no reason given no response at all just denied. No easy way to contact them about it or anything just feels like a scam to me.

Umm they gave me a reason mine was denied... I scanned my online confirmation, not the receipt the store sent me.

Here's one completely off base. How bought a beretta olympia? Bolt action semi auto. Italian military trainer. I have one and am very impressed by the fit and finish. The action to stock fit on mine is amazing. Fits like a glove.

I have a Marlin 795 with a cheap red dot and 25 round Pro Mags. Bought it 4 or 5 years ago for 180$ and it is honestly one of my favorite, go to boom sticks for steel ringing. 1000's of rounds down the pipe and it still runs like a champ with garbage ammo. I love it and everybody that has shot it thoroughly enjoys it. It is the small block v8 of semi 22's....inexpensive, works well, reliable and rugged. A good used 795 can be had for 175 ish $ as they are no longer being produced. It would be a great way to test the waters in the rimfire pool to see if you want to invest the coin in something higher end like a custom 10/22 or a TUF22. They seem to hold value well. Can't go wrong. I had a Remington 597 that was borderline useless as it would not cycle. I have an A22 that is a nicer fit and finish however it is also a 400$ as opposed to the 180$ marlin.

I have a CZ 455 with a scope if I want to shoot groups but it hasn't seen the light of day in a few years however it is a fantastic boom stick in its own right.

I am definitely not going for a bolt action .22, atleast not right now.

So here is my question- a ruger 10/22 or a savage A22? I have no brand loyalty being new. I have watched god knows how many youtube videos on both guns, and it seems they both have their pluses and minuses, with the ruger having the obvious and heavy advantage of mod support. That said, I would think a stock, trigger and maybe barrel mod would be all that I would be after...if I wanted something better, I'd probably do a scratchbuilt hot rod to my liking.

What say ye'?

Not a chance.

New Winchester wildcat with scope on sale at Cabelas..all good reviews..I don't own one but will eventually (wife says I need to sell one to aquire one kind of thing) :)
Field strip and clean looks like the best around.

shms, see Post 54. I think it gives an answer (along with extra info) depending on the OPs choices of use.
Handling both is a good suggestion, if he's near a store that handles both. There's lots of info in these 70+ posts.

Marlin 795. Won't break the bank and just as good if not better than the rest. Every type of LR round gets fed and cycles like butter. Love it.

Aftermarket stuff is a thing too.

OP, seems like no one can answer which one you would personally prefer between 1022 and A22. Maybe go to a Gunstore handle both and pick one.

Definitely the next thing I need to do!

There is a LOT of awesome advice in here. I feel like all thats left is for me to make a decision on what I like best or feels best.

I will check them out! Seems they aren't made anymore, but maybe in the used market.

Im gonna throw i different spin here.
GSG-16 if you want a FUN plinker.

Its tatticool and as accurate as most other semi's (no where near as accurate as a bolt)

the 10/22 only has 10rds in a mag, the GSG has 22rds and comes with 2 mags.

Put a cheap red dot on it and off you go.

Agree with this...

The stock 10/22 was one of my favourite guns out of the block - one of my first guns. I am personally not in favour of the box magazine and when I first had it, I used Butler Creek Steel Lips 25-ound banana magazines on it. Then the Charger came out and the government put a kibosh on the Butler Creek mags. My 10/22 was very reliable even with the cheap Bushnell scope I had on it. I didn't do any modifications to it and out of the box it was OK, with some adjustments.

I got the GSC16 this year. Love the thing and so do the kids. Yes, it is pretty plasticky out of the box and some may not get past this, but with those plastic picatinny rails I can throw a red dot on it. It is surprisingly accurate out of the box. The takedown and such could be slightly easier (ie replace screws with pins, etc.) and that metal guard piece to unscrew and such upside down, etc. The big advantage in the GSG is the 22-round mags - and most of the sponsors here will sell extra pairs of mags for relatively cheap. No problems with mine.

I went with the Kriss Vector 22lr platform, my GSG16 is fun but it has enough drawbacks that I've decided to sell it and it's whole kit.
