MAUSER 18 Waldjagd

It would be interesting to know how much this rifle would sell for in Canada, since the Mauser 18 without sights in 308 is approximately $700 to $900

My thought exactly, why not just buy a regular M18 and be done with it but as they say, “different strokes”.

The iron sights, since very few rifles are available with iron sights in Canada, also the Ruger GSR is now very difficult to buy and is approximately $1600-$1700. These rifles are meant for hunting in the woods (waldjagd - hunting in the woods) and they have a short heavy medium weight barrel of 20 inches, where as the Mauser 18 without iron sights the barrel length is 22 inches. The factory that makes these rifles in Germany also manufacturers the Sauer and Blaser firearms. The Mauser importer in Canada is MD Charlton, however I tried contacting them but I never heard back from them. A comparable rifle would be the Tikka Battue, however the Tikka has a single stack magazine while the Mauser has a double stack magazine.

Quality of modern Mausers are significantly overestimated since they went from M03 to M12 it was a huge step back. M18 is the most budget budget thing they could do.

This is probably the closest to what you want:

Tikka battue is also cheap, short, fiber optic irons. Tikka Arctic has way better irons if this is the main thing for you.

If you are for the feel of "euro quality timless thing", look at:

Also in the past I have owned the CZ557 Ranger and the Tikka Battue, so I am familier with both of these rifles and know the the pro's and con's for both of them. I also currently own a Tikka CTR which I think is a very good rifle, however it is a different category due to its weight and no iron sights. Some background information on the history of the Mauser 18 action.

Mauser m18 is similar to the tikka and cz in the sense that they are budget rifles but the design of the Mauser/ Sauer 100 is fairly novel: 60 degree throw, dual plunger extractors.

I’ve never owned one but from examining a few the quality of manufacture seems on par with the options from tikka and Sauer. CZ is apparently quality as well but I am starting to suspect kurgan is a paid influencer :dancingbanana:

I like the look of the bolt handle on the Mauser and the stocks seem comparable to the stock on the m03 I owned.

Doesn’t look the sights are the same, might be a double dot with a triangular rear sight as well.

I like the removable butt pad storage is for a truck/ camp gun for sure

A few other companies make “traquer” battue and “drukjagd” (sp?) models with ribs or barrel mounted irons and short barrels. Can’t think of any other bolts offhand

Trust me, I wish I were!! :). I just hate seeing people waste their money on junk... especially if I already experienced the pain of junk ownership.

I’m just joking with you, but if you play your cards right who knows. They have definitely been kicking out cz 600s to “ micro influencers” from what I see online

Well, I was influenced, :) as I have a 600 on order. I think they will build a strong niche market with them. But, they are indeed going into a different, more European direction.

I think every major gun manufacturer has a small army of "influencers".

I'd rather try the Mauser than the CZ and Tikka as well.

And I've had CZ 557s and Tikkas.

Pretty sure I'd get the quality I was paying for, unless there is demonstrably something wrong on them.

Worked on me too, when I have the scratch I will get an Alpha in 8x57 if any are available. Wish you could get them with sights and the med heavy barrel, might have to happen on its own

My sentiments exactly. However, they will most likely offer an Alpha with sights over time. I got a complete CZ 557 front sight assembly (my Smith will drill and tap) and I will pick-up a NECG rear peep sight. It will be the perfect all-weather bush whacker. I am already looking for a decent red-dot to go with it.

I've considered the M18 Mauser for a while now, saw them go on sale a couple times for a fair price but the plastic and all the polymer turn me off. Saw a review that showed that even the trigger was made of plastic:confused:......thats a bit to much plastic for my taste. Im okay with polymer trigger guard and mag but trigger??

Much rather buy a Sauer 100 than the mauser m18. I had one in 8x57 that i sold off after a couple seasons which i regret. It shot 1/2" groups, had bottom metal, and a sturdy stock.
