Vz-58 Vs Ar??

Recently myself, RobMc and some others were out shooting.. we got to see the vz vs. ar face to face... there was about a foot and a half of snow on the ground so we had some fun... dumping the vz in the snow, jumping on it, and defacing it in other ways (all open bolt). We then loaded a 5 rd and popped them off with no problems... we did this about 5 times and only had 1 jam!

the ar couldnt even take that... it froze up just from being in -0 degree weather and i didnt put one mag through where i didnt get a hard stoppage.. i was sold on the vz and as much as i trust ar and ar models... i cant say id want one in conditions i wasnt used to..

my 2 cents

Maybe if Robert knew how to a lube an AR...
I doubt it was just 0 BTW
-10 and lower you cant use CLP as it freezes/gums up.

No-one really would intensionally choose th VZ/CZ58 given a choice, and some education

I've only handled a VZ, never fired one, so I'm not really qualified to offer an educated opinion on which I trust more. I can say that I prefer the ergonomics on the AR.

As far as AR's below zero, it's all a matter of the operator. I've operated AR platforms in -40, and they'll work just fine if you make some basic adjustments to how you lube them.

Its a nice fun gun, dont get me wrong.

MAGS are a huge issue

Lack of ease of attachment of Optics, Lights and useful slings.

I am hoping to get one of the Shorties - but (and keep in mind I had one in Afghan, during the dark times at the US Embassy, when the M4A1's where tied up with ITAR crap) its not a gun to use in combat, or work.

Most malf's on an AR can be rectified faster than most VZ shooters can find their magwells and then fumble a mag change, followed by the clumsy grope for the bolt handle to chamber the first round. It's not the VZ operator's fault...it's just not a very ergonomic rifle compared to the AR. I think the designer must have been left-handed, like Sam Colt.

Advantage AR. ;)

As far as ergonomics and bolt handles are concerned the VZ takes the cake hands down IMO.

I prefer a side charging handle and find the AR handle awkward.

That said both are very good rifles though and each have their advantages. In a nutshell, if I had to trudge through a swamp I'd carry a VZ... In an urban environment I'd take the AR preferably in 6.8.... with a piston upper :p

ps, someone wanna start an ar-180b vs ar15 thread? :D

AR is by far the better weapon and the comparison is not even close. The only thing the 58 has going for it is the 858 being non-restricted :)

U guys missed the boat - the troopies in ghan list their favorite calibers - #1 Is the good ole 762 nato - .308 cal. - #2 Is the 762X39. The least favorite is the 22 cal .556 nato. BECAUSE of the results on target.
I love my colt car 15 for punchin holes in paper - but in combat - give me a gas piston czech 58 every time up to 200 yds. - (most combat) After 200 yds - I'll use an m-14 or hide till the sniper shows up ----

I own a couple of AR's but I prefer the VZ-58. In its current state the VZ58 is a nice rifle for left handed shooters. With a few modifications these left handed ergonomics can be reversed.

Right out of the boxes, the VZ-58s were comfortable, they rotate from the low to high ready positions smoothly, the VZ-58 is very light and extremely durable. I find them accurate right out of the box, easily putting all rounds into the 8" scoring ring of an IDPA target from 165 yards with the open sites offhand.

We have had no FTF's or malfunctions with our VZ58's. I cannot say the same for my AR-15s. The more I shoot the VZ-58 the better it feels. Sure it is not black and uber cool looking, or has the KevB seal of approval, but I prefer the dependability and durability of the VZ-58.

Iff'n you sort the ammo by over all length and weight and tune the cz 858 (not the sloppy chrome bore restricted) you can shoot 1/4 to 1/2 inch at a hundred , and 1 inch to 1 and a 1/2 inch at 200 yds. - Just like a .22 cal. AR 15 :D:p

^I recall you saying you shot something like half an inch at a hundred with your 858. What sort of optics were you using?

:jerkit:

I'm probably one of the only guys on this board to have shot people with both 7.62x39 and 5.56mm. Guess what round I prefer

BigRed as well -- and he runs 5.56mm too

Gee shocker

aimpoint micro with appropriate size black round target -- the trigger is what is important - you gotta squeeze real slow --

OK, I don't buy that either, especially at 200 yards. Mind you, the legend of KevinB and Big Red never come with details on the other hand. I don't recall any detailed stories or supporting pix. lol
