Just came across this old pre-war Winchester M70 in 300 Magnum. Dates 1939 thereabouts. I don’t think it’s been out of the stock in 83 years. Full original down to the sight hood and sling swivels. No extra holes either. Stored properly it shows no rust. Just some use on the stock. I often wonder where these old rifles were taken and the memories they made.
Just wanted to share it.

Might want to be careful on that cartridge name, I think. The 300 Win Mag was not introduced until 1963. If that rifle is truly from 1939, at best that might be a 300 Weatherby Magnum, but more likely is a 300 H&H Magnum. Can get "caught" with old cartridge names - I have a barrel chamber marked "30 Springfield 1906" - not likely to find a box of ammo with that name - we would call it a 30-06, today. For many years prior to the 7.62 NATO, a "7.62" was referring to a 7.62x63 - also the modern 30-06 - by the European metric name.

Was a "thing" for a period in late 40's and 50's - I think is easy to run in a 300 Weatherby reamer into a 300 H&H chamber - so be sure what you have!!!

By the way - a VERY cool older rifle - checkered metal butt plate??

You bet. A 300 WBY goes about 1/2 way in whereas a 300 H&H chambers as it should.

Yes metal buttplate with the inlet notch at the top.

I see it has not been drilled and tapped yet for a rear scope base. Thats good. Originally the scope base went on the front receiver ring and the rear attached at the two holes on the side where a receiver sight would go.

A classic rifle, indeed! Very nice.

I'm not familiar with pre-war M70s, but I recall some models had the swivel studs nicely inletted rather than simple screwed in. I can't tell from your pictures, but would be curious to know if that's the case for your rifle.

It would be fun to track down a period correct sling to go with that.

Nice find!

Beautiful old classic rifle and cartridge! The 300 H&H is a top five favorite of mine...........long, sleek and ###y!

Thanks guys.
Stickhunter, the sling studs/loops are screwed in on this rifle. The front has a backing type metal insert in the barrel channel to prevent the stud from pulling through.
A old sling would compliment it for sure.
