Why does the 336 play 2nd fiddle to the 94?

The 336 is a generally better shooter

This has been my experience as well. I think the 336 is a better rifle in a lot of aspects but the 94 is a better looking rifle, lighter weight and had the name "Winchester" on the bbl.

Does anyone know what the prices were compared way back in the day?

I prefer the Marlin 336 because it is easily scoped & most of us 'need' a scope as we age...

That being said, you guys who love the 94 have valid points in that it's lighter etc.

Jay’s 35 for the win! Too bad Marlins all didn’t have a nice slim forearm like that as to me it looks and feels much better. I have two 94s but would love a 336 in 35 Remington some day:)

I have a Winchester M94 chambered in 38-55. It is a 1979/80 Reproduction [Legendary Frontiersman]
With the 255 grain Barnes .377" diameter FNSP and 3x grains of H322, it will average 1.25" at 100 meters.
An occasional group is a zinger, with the smallest right at .625" This rifle sports a Williams FP rear and a
orange firesight at the front.

I also own a Marlin 336A [24", half magazine] chambered in 30-30. I have a low powered scope on it,
1.5-5x, and with a load it likes [Speer 170 FNSP and 3x grains of Leverevolution], it is a moa rifle.
It also shoots the Flex-tip 160 grain bullet well, and I recently threw together some 150 grain Speer
Deep curls that are showing promise.

It is a toss-up to me. I do like the ease of disassembly/cleaning of the Marlin, but appreciate the
heritage of the M94 Winchesters. I shot my biggest Whitetail to date with the 38-55. :) Dave.

The Win 94 is a John Browning design and has taken a huge portion of game in Canada over the years. Its more of a compliment to the 336 that it stands among the shoulders of giants.

Kind of interesting get strange everyone knows about John Browning yet we don't know anything regards the inital birthing of the 336.(36?)
IIRC 1936 was it's introductory year. That's it that's all folks.

I agree! The fat forehand is the thing that I don’t like about the Marlins, I’m not a fan of pistol grips either! I was hoping Ruger would make a few mods to the current models to make them a bit more “classy/slander”… but that is the reason I like 94’s better!

I don’t like the lever on the 336, as it do not fit firmly against the stock.
I also find the fore end feels like an oar.

I’m not a fan of a scope on a 336 or a 94.
Now those Williams fire sights are the cats meow.

The Model 94 is complex and intricate, yet, like all Browning designs it works. The 336 is simplified and, in many ways, improved but lacks the panache of the Winchesters. In many respects the Winchesters are nothing short of marvelous. I have seen old 94's abused beyond belief, which still did the job. I admire the 94 for it's complexity and reliability. I admire the the 336 for it's functionality.

I'd take another 94 anytime. While the 336 is a nice rifle, and no doubt the owners like them, the 94 has a huge following, not only because of nostalgia, TV and movie fame, but because they are nice rifles to carry and use. I hunt whitetail with a 94 32 WS, mostly because it is light and easy to carry.

Firing Pin Spring $4.32ea. :p
