30-06 for brown bears

I would heed the advice here for sure, a .30-06 will hammer a bear. I would be looking at the 168gr T-TSX bullet personally - it'll expand on light game but also hold together on tough animals. Good BC for sheep hunting. A .30-06 handload I cooked up is pushing ~165gr bullets to well over 2900fps out of a 22" featherweight barrel.

Up yonder in Alaska, where the grizzlies get huge, their Department of Fish and Game recommend bringing a .30-06 to hunt with. Considering they could be held liable should something go wrong, I'm sure they're informing people well. Look at #### Proenneke. He survived for years with a .30-06 and .357.

On top of that, I'd rather have a .30-06 and hit what I'm aiming at than a .300WM and miss because of flinch. I'd rather have a .308 than a .30-06 if it would make me hit more accurately (it won't for me). You have a caliber that can throw pebbles (100gr reloads), rocks (150-175), and boulders (180-220). Don't worry about a thing.

I have a short list of calibers I would own if I could only have 1. .30-06 is pretty up there man. Really hard to beat.

I have spent lots of hours hiking solo thru grizzly territory with a 270 win just elk hunting, I took that gun on one sheep hunt. Spent lots of time sheep hunting with a 7mm rem mag. I would be happy with a 30-06 loaded with 180 accubonds in grizzly country. Most grizzlies I have seen sheep hunting don't stick around enough to cause trouble, they got my scent and left me alone. The grizzlies that probably did stick around I never seen anyway, so no harm no foul as of yet. I have gone sheep hunting with a 338 win and slept just as good as I have with the 7 rem mag beside me. Pick a good tough bullet and go look for sheep, only time you should be worried about bears is when you pack out meat.

So much to learn here. Thanks very much!

I will never (can only afford gopher safaris in Southern SK or AB) be able to afford a Grizzly Trip/Tag/Adventure, but it sure is good learn from all your experiences!

Peace Be The Journey!

Cheers, Barney

It has been my recent experience that the guys on the west coast say that the 30-06 fine, and the guys in the east keep telling me it's too small.

Great thread guys. I appreciate all your comments

If I was going to hunt the brown bear, it would definitely give me a reason to purchase a 375 H&H. The same would apply if Alberta had its grizzly hunt.

30-06Sprg (180-220gr SP) will take down a 1200lb Moose like it's been hit by a truck. It will certainly take down a 600Lb Griz with no problem.

moose are easy to kill and bears of all kinds are generally NOT....I consider 338 and up best medicine for bears....Smithers BC hunter took over a dozen 180 grain factory loads to down a G bear and the G bear in the Smithers airport likely would have killed a game warden armed with a 30-06 had the other game warden with a 338 stopped the bear...

there is a vast difference between killing a meat animal and STOPPING a charging bear...

Your average Mountain Grizzly ain't that big, 400 Lbs. would be a ball park figure.
