I recently was able to cross something off my list I was looking for for a while, a Marlin 1895 trapper stainless big loop, 16.5” barrel chambered in 45-70 of course. This I bought second hand and I believe unfired.

For those not familiar this is the somewhat less common sister to the SBL, main differences are the shorter barrel, skinner front and rear sights (rather than the XS sight and rail combo on the SBL), black painted and textured wood stocks (same style later used on the Marlin 1895 dark) and some black accent parts. The stainless on the TSBL is polished the same as the SBL is but then it is bead blasted for a very smooth matte finish.

7lbs and 5 round capacity makes this a very stout little package and I’m looking forward to shooting it!

Curious to hear from other who own or have shot a TSBL what loads and performance are you seeing and your general thoughts about this gun.

Such a fun rifle and actually pretty hard to get!!

At 100m I get cloverleaf groups with mine. Sig Romeo5 red dot.

Starline brass, cci primers, 300gr campro, 57gr of D4895 powder.

405 gr cast
39 grains of reloader 7

still tinkering around but thats what i found most accurate in mine. love the gun, unfortunately shot 1-2 feet high even with sights maxed out, so swapped with a buddy and now works good!

Yeah not too many of these around and of course prices reflect that these days!

I’m considering mounting a dot but I also would like to keep the skinner sights in place (which would mean some type of barrel dovetail scout mount I think), what did you use on yours?

I’m probably going to try both the 300 and 405 gr compro projectiles and see what I like better, and go from there.

Koseli, did you swap guns or swap sights or something else?

I personally just took off the skinner sight. I lose too much sight picture if the red dot is too far forward and i can't use both eyes when i need to. Just installed a short receiver rail and a MWI handguard to be able to grip further forward.

I have some 405gr hardcast i haven't tried yet as well. Next on my list

after allot of f***ing around i ended up trading front sights with a friend (slightly different height) and his worked better so using that! a little dissapointed because of that but over all love the gun

Wonder if these will be made again under Ruger. Got mine as an impulse buy at the LGS when they first came out, still haven't taken it out of the box. I had bear defence in mind, wanted something handy and in stainless, this checked all the boxes

Yeah definitely checks a lot of the boxes for that purpose!

As for Ruger making them again I’m sure eventually we’ll see these or something similar again, but first I’ll bet we’ll see the 1895 dark series make a reappearance. Don’t think anyone knows what their release schedule is but I suspect it’ll be a bit of a slow roll of new models and I’d guess the 1894 will be the next one to come back. In which variation though who knows? Maybe the 1894 SBL?

I talked myself out of buying a BNIB one of these off the EE back in 2020 for $1100. With the prices they're going for now that's one of my big regrets.

New 1895's are already arriving at dealers in the USA, IRG or Prophet River might be able to help import one but I'm certain they are going to be a hot hot hot item for the next one to two years before supply catches up demand

Yes they are which is great and the initial impressions on those first rifles seem really positive. I know of a couple of dealers here they are taking waiting list for the new SBL once those arrive.

I was more speculating on the next model that they’ll release after the SBL and I’d imagine we’ll see a new dark series before a new trapper, but who knows of course

I have a dark 45-70. It was a toss up between the dark or trapper when I was looking.. went with the dark because it was cheaper and gave more sight options.
If I had a trapper I would swap out the factory skinner for the skinner rail w integral peep for more options.
My rifle is a hunting gun I shoot 405 hard cast handloads with either 3031 or red dot for light loads. I use mag primers to help with burning all the powder..the short tube spits unburnt curnals lol. I love the 16" barrel and use the rifle as my main hunting gun

First thing I did was remove the irons and mount an Aimpoint on it. Three years now and it has never shifted POI even after taking a few tumble while pushing bush on moose hunts.

This thread has motivated me to finally get out and shoot mine. I'll have to see how it compares to my mirokuchester 1886.

Too many toys, too little time

Very nice setup.

I saw that recently Midwest is making an integrated aimpoint ghostring mount that looks interesting, I haven’t decided if I’ll mount a dot or stick with the irons but this might be a good option

Nice and good choice, the dark guns are very cool and a bit easier to mount optics right out of the box which is nice. Curious if you’ve made use of the threaded barrel for a brake at all?

Since they were such good sellers I wouldn’t be surprised if the dark makes a reappearance from Ruger sooner than later.
