The Gun Case Thread

I once had a Hellis that had belonged to the owner of the famous race horse Northern Dancer. He had given the case to his jockey to store his riding crops in. Good vintage cases are hard to find, and with a great label even harder to find. Definitely a worthy restoration candidate, somewhere there’s a lonely Lang looking for a home.

Old junk. You would have to pay me to take it to the dump.

It's not about the contents, minus 1. It's the thought of the box in its former glory and the previous contents. Maybe something like this.

It has a a couple of things worth while but once a file gets rust on it they are useless except to make knives and such. The wood handles on the side are for the files. Might be something hid underneath worth while. If it went cheap enough I would buy it just for the one angle gauge on top plus the files are useful to me as knife material .

Well there is a nice rosewood adj. square, On the old tool posts ,I hear of fellows soaking old files in vinegar to bring them back, never bothered myself .
I will eat the rust and being a weak acid , will help add some bite to the teeth, So I hear.
But too bad about the case, I follow some of those auctions and every old tool is crap and rare as hens teeth.

Neat Ashcroft, there's a connection to my hometown, I'm from Oshawa. Northern Dancer's grave is at the old Windfields Farm site, literally 10min down the road from the gun club.
Did you ever reclaim the case to the gun?
Wonder if that gun was ever hunted/shot around here?

Okay so it seems the humour of the post was largely missed!
My mistake, I should have posted this in The Gun Case Thread. I'll see if it can be moved over.

I've got nothing against files.
Who knows, maybe they're still sharp or the steel's good for knifemaking or something??

Nope, that case is lost to history. I tried to track it down but this was pre internet, such research was very difficult then. I wouls expect that if you had good pheasant hunting around your area years ago it got used locally. A beautiful best quality Charles Hellis Featherweight, I sold it to a friend and when the initial long gun registry was being initialized he moved it to his future retirement place in Wyoming along with most of his guns.

I have an old leather leg of mutton case. Well worn but still functional. The end cap fits tightly and takes effort to slip off. Its branded "Redhead" which to me is a basspro brand but this case seems much older and of better quality when new then what i know of basspros redhead brand as of the last 20 years.
Was there another company making such cases or has the redhead brand just suffered the same fate as others when bought out by big boxstores?

I can post pics later

Large companies are where quality brand names go to die. Just look at my Charles Dalys.

My last charles daly was a semi auto 20ga built in turkey. It worked flawlessly but its along way from even my linder marked Charles Daly hammer which is well below your Dalys. I sold the auto to a friend so his son could get into hunting.
