Picture of the day

In the end, it really is a funny way to treat a returning “victorious” General, and the facts should speak for themselves, yet somehow with Castro’s death it will be washed out with re-written history glorifying "Struggle" Heroes of the "Revolution".

Russian communist have done just that since 1905 revolution. Very few of 1905 veterans took part in 1917 revolution because they were dead. Many of 1917 vets were dead by 1930 and rest nearly wiped out by 1939. Soviet officers that went to Spanish Civil war? Most were not alive by June 1941.

That practice continued in most of communist countries after 1945. Vietnam is one exception that I heard of - war vets are still very much admired and remembered.

There’s a movie on Netflix called The Siege of Jadotville…interesting movie-not sure how historically accurate it is but lots of action!

That movie is quite representative of what happened to the Irish troops in Jadotville. IMHO, it was actually toned down a bit to protect the UN.

I got a UK AAR briefing on the Falklands war back in 1982-83 and one of the noteworthy comments was that the basic leather ankle boots, not unlike the ones worn during WW1, WW2, and Korea, failed in the cold wet ground conditions. I've been on the ground in the Falklands and could see why that was.

Soviet soldiers captured by the Germans and returned there by the victorious allies suffered a similar fate, execution or the Gulag.

Grizz

Great country for sheep though. Lots of lush tussok grass with abundant moisture.

Some cute ones as well, the locals wore rubber boots for more than one reason, lol

They occasionally lose a sheep to a landmine as lots are still hidden in the peat moss that’s not cordoned off.

There was a cordoned off minefield right behind the the backyard fence at the house on Beaver Rd we stayed in on overnight trips there. Drinking beer and pissing over the fence into the minefield was good fun.
