Type-81 pictures, range reports, and modifications thread

I wonder if anybody has any experience with this...I wanna fit a side rail, much like the one TI used to sell. I say used to cuz they have informed me that it has been discontinued. The side rail I'm looking at is labeled as it's made for an AK47/Ak74. Will the mounting bracket fit right out the box or is there any modification I would have to do?

That's what TI was selling but you still need the side mount.

Can someone with the side mount send it to a guy to scan and mass produce? It's crazy that the pic mounts were available for such a short time and a lot of people didn't get them despite ordering them and are Desperate for an alternative!

My humble opinion is that it was a dumb design anyways. A proprietary dovetail shaped similarly to the AK ones... BUT not actually compatible with any of them. Plus the questionable " alliexpress "1913 side mount that came with it looked so bulky and the latch mechanism hung down too low. Why not design the AK one to begin with ? Made no sense.

Agreed. It was a poor choice given all the great optic mounts available to the AK world.

To any 3D printing experts like forwardsh , a question. With TI discontinuing the 1913 side mount rail kit, and until a third party releases their own AK style side mount rail, those without are limited to purchasing a whole Kobra kit and the buy a third party rail if they want to use an alternate red dot or micro prism. A while back on Reddit, someone posted a prototype Red Dot/Microprism that was made from aluminum, and mounted atop the rear site block without permanently modifying the rifle. I haven't seen any more posts since the first, and my message to the creator to see id then project continued remains unanswered. Could a similar mount be crafted in 3D printed polymer, and would it be sturdy enough to allow mounting of a lightweight optic? If so, this would give an option for non Kobra buyers who missed.the TI rail, at least for small sized optics.

Sorry, the image didn't attach proper.

Cool! You could throw a buffer tube to 1913 adapter in their, or build an alternate that has 1913 instead of the tube socket.

A 3d printed part could work. It might be a bit bulky in trying to give it strength though.

Here's an example from the mad scientists at AWCY?.

Here's a post on another thread I did regarding the red dot mount. Since the original maker hasn't followed up on it, if someone could make it in polymer or aluminum, it may be a useful supplement for those looking to use a small optic on the Type 81 who can't get a side rail:

How did you attach the scope to the rear sight post? Interesting idea for a red dot or prism sight.

I designed the mount then CNC'ed it from 6061 Aluminum and after what feels like a million prototypes I feel pretty good about this one. Leaves the Iron Sights fully functional and is good a solid fit, the majority of the stability is from and force is against, the interior contours and front lips vs the center pin.

This one is a direct mount for a Vortex reddot, with the same pattern as their standard mounts, to keep it low, will likely do the usual suspects of base plate patterns for dots and prisms.

I may look into the feasibility of such a mount after i get other projects completed. I think ive also come up with a non permanent way to add a bolt release to the type 81 rifles.

Cool! Thanks, Murray, and good luck with your existing projects!

I designed and 3d printed clamshell to be used with one of those airsoft AK Zenitco charging handles. I bored it out to just a bit larger than the end nub diameter of the Type 81 charging handle so it would slip over. The handle comes with a 5mm and 3mm M3 grub screw but they're either too long or too short. I'll swap it out for a 4mm so it sits flush (it's sitting proud in the picture).

I'm very happy with the way this turned out, it feels super snug. If there's any interest from the community then maybe I'll make kits.
