What's the future for 7.62x39 and SKS in Canada with recent events?

What do you think the the future for 7.62x39 ammo is in Canada given the recent events? Will other countries take up the slack or will prices we're used to seeing for non-corrosive like with Barnual 7.62x39 never come back? Americans were getting the Russian Wolf brand and we were getting the Barnaul Brand? I've never seen Wolf for sale up here.

SKS availability should stay the same no? Are Russian SKS rifles imported into Canada really coming from Russian stock piles or are they coming from third party countries anyhow? Could 7.62x39 price hikes lead to SKS prices drops you think?

How much is a nice lee enfield going for these days? Cheap Surplus ran out along time ago and the prices did not exactly crash.

There are so many 7.62X39 rifles around it's hard to imagine that commercial ammo producers won't supply the market but even the commercial market is seeing a lot of demand so it might be a while.... at some point people will stop buying and then after that there might be a correction once suppliers see that the market is no longer willing to pay. There are still many people in the US buying their first guns, so they will need to buy some ammo regardless of the cost.

Surplus 7.62X39 bucked the trend when general ammo rose in prices starting after the financial melt down but slowly caught up and by the looks of it the days of readily available cheap surplus ammo might be over... the occasional deal but a far cry from $200 a case.

My assumption is that Norinco will step up production to fill some of the Barnaul gap. But with all the other price increases don't expect to see a box of non corrosive under $10 again

You can will always be able to get match grade 7.62x39 just not the cheap stuff

I think the increasing ammo will def put a damper on the continued increases in SKS value. It doesn't mean it will drop. just not likely to double in value every 4 years. Collector grade will keep doing what's it been doing. Its the shooter grade that will see a price impact.

And Sirplus corrosive will be unobtanium by the end of summer

There are billions of 7.62x39 rounds floating around. I think maybe about 15 years before the surplus dries up, importation will be more of the issue. Barnaul will be sanctioned by summer i bet. I have more 7.62x39 than i can shoot in my lifetime. I know many others like me.

Buy cases now while you can. You can always sell it. I remember being in my early twenties (1980?) and buying cases of high quality Portugese 8mm from the old Lever Arms on Howe Street, downtown Vancouver. My arms ached but I still have a couple of cases and try buying it now.....

Agree completely buying corrosive surplus now is not as cheap as it was a few years ago but the average price before taxes and shipping seems to be around 40 cents. This is much cheaper than many other calibers, especially if you’re not hunting. If all else fails and the SKS gets banned and you’re sitting on a pile of 7.62 surplus there are a number of very decent bolt action rifles on the market like the CZ527, my favourite 😀. I sold my LE Jungle Carbine years ago when 303 started getting scarcer and pricier. Loved it but didn’t regret it and moved on the the SKS.

That 8MM stuff is great, loved it. Would love to have more, went through my last run of it before Covid.

With the Russian x39 off the market (as soon as the whatever is left from the current stock get bought up), I don't think Norinco will be able to fill the gap, as their shipments are already spotty at best.

Which means once it does get in, it will be gone fast and prices will go up with the increased demand.
Not looking very good right now..

CZ Shooter, when was the last time you were able to purchase "Russian SURPLUS AMMO"??????

If you're talking about Barnaul Ammo, it isn't surplus, it's commercially manufactured ammo that resembles milspec ammo.

The last crate of Soviet era surplus ammo I saw for sale, was at least 5+ years ago and it was old stock.

Other than that, I agree with you.

Ruger rifle firing pins were set up for American made brass … there will always be expensive brass ammo alternatives. SKS’s and surplus ammo will go up and up. There is world wide demand for 7.62x39 …. Not everyone moved on to the newer Russian ammo caliber.

Marstar said they were selling the last of the Chinese sks like a couple years ago … who knows … we got Italian Carcanos in recently from Ethiopia??? … so likely beater SKS will trickle in here and there, but prices will rise.

Sorry...what I meant was the Barnaul production ammo.
Whatever is left on the shelves is not getting replaced.

On a side note, this will also be a disaster for anyone in the 5.56 camp especially the T97 operators, as it was the only cheap(er) alternative and that one was specifically designed for steel cased ammo.

Depends if Norinco starts to crank it out

Ukraine has been slowly changing to NATO calibres as time and politics allows. Still lots of AK-47 and AK-74's around.

I haven’t seen any 47s or sks for years from that front now. Even the babas are being given AK74s. I think most of the 7.62x39 is now in militia or civilian hands or simply isnt worth fielding due to simple logistics. Easier to use the same cal as what the russians are using. Even their tavor copies are chambered in 5.45x39.
