Hey guys,

Kind of a newb question but whats the major difference between a single and double action semi pistol? I get the difference in revolvers but the semi is a different story.

thanks,

Jon

Same diff in pistols, single action means the the trigger just drops the hammer, double action means the trigger cocks the hammer and drops it.
You have single action pistols like 1911's
You have traditional double actions like SIG/HK/Beretta, first trigger pull is double action, after that the slide cocks the hammer and it's single action.
You have double action only like LEO Beretta's, where each pull of the trigger cocks the hammer and fires the pistol. The hammer does not stay cocked when the slide moves back into battery.

Do you have your R-PAL ?

Thanks for the responses. And yes I do have my R-PAL. After reading my oringinal post I think I worded that question wrong. I'm well aware of the mechanical differences between the two, I'm just trying to decide what action I'm really looking for in a range shooter. It will be my first pistol and I'm looking for the best of both worlds between accuracy and function. I'm just kind of torn between what will be best for me.

thanks again,

Jon

With semis you get to pick from SA, SA/DA, and DAO (double action only).

Im not too sure myself why anyone would want a DAO semi for a range gun... as far as I know these are mostly made for law enforcement and carry guns where the double action only trigger is considered a form of safety.

As for SA/DA... not much difference, unless it comes with a decocker. My CZ75 for instance is SA/DA, but I've never once actually fired it in double action. When you chamber a round the hammer gets cocked in the process... so unless you decock manually for whatever reason, you'll never actually fire the gun in DA.

My 2 cents, for the best trigger feel go with a single action such as a 1911. You just won't beat this.
