May I suggest 6mm remington or 7X57
Also the 270 Winchester is great with the 130gr bullet (what this calibre was designed to shoot).

All great calibres especially if you hunt in open flat-land type terrain where long shots may or may not be required. These are very flat shooting calibres.

a BLR in 243 or 7-08 would work well if you need to shoot past 150 yards. If not, a Marlin 336 in 30-30 would be almost perfect.

A used Savage 99 in .300 or .308, a brand new BLR in .308, a used Win 94 AE in .307 or a Win 88 in .308 are obvious choices if you're looking for .308 Win power levels. A Marlin 336XLR in .30-30 using LeverEvolution ammo would do nicely as well.
Personally, I already have a Win 94 and a Savage 99, and a Marlin 336 and, practical though it is, the BLR just doesn't interest me, probably because I'm not crazy about the styling. So if I were buying, I would buy the new .308 Marlin, the blued/walnut model. About the power of a .300 Savage, maybe a bit more, in a brand new (i.e. not used) rifle with traditional styling, if that matters. So far, there's only one ammo source (Hornady LeverEvolution) but that could change in the next few years. I'm guessing you're not a handloader.
Lots of people are afraid this cartridge won't catch on, but it's getting good reviews, and one way to help guarantee it won't take off is to NOT buy one.

And if you have LOTS of money, you might be able to get someone to sell you a Sako Finnwolf in .308 Winchester. Great rifle, but very pricey these days.

308 is a great all round cartridge. if you have your eye on one pick it up you'll be happy with it. Cheap factory ammo available anywhere and fun to shoot. had a BLR, now my mom's, and it is a sweet gun. i want it back. you can get low recoil rounds by federal and rem now that cut the recoil down to half. they do kick pretty hard though with the short barrel with the hot ammo in 180gr but you will be able to hunt anything from yotes to moose with this gun.

I have a pre-'64 model 88 that was my first rifle and you couldn't pry it from my cold dead fingers. The '88 was the finest lever gun ever built IMO.

If you do not like the BLR, I like the A-bolt but not the BLR probably because I have an 88, the Marlin 336 in any of the available calibres with decent ammo will take care of any deer, elk, or moose problems you may encounter. The 308 express is just a rimmed 308 win, and the 30-30 evolution ammo will extend your range in whatever calibre you choose.

Have fun,

ian

Marlin 45/70...you can load 'em down to 30/30 power levels, but you can't load a 30/30 up to 45/70 levels. A Marlin in 45/70 loaded with the Gould Hollow point is about as good as it gets for deer.

wow cant believe the great responses, thank you, its actually pretty tight terrain with little clearings in the trees (maybe at most 100 yards) , i was kinda thinking a .308 just because i have the 700sps and was just simplifying for ammo sake,

ive been eyeing the exchange forum and i see a couple i like but just wasnt to familiar with the calibres and how powerful they are

also what i forgot to ask is that, are the older models safe to use?? im weary of guns that are around 40 years old

Lever actions just seem rather scarce im noticing

Yup, they sell fast when they do show up...in spite of having rabid folks against them.
I'm told the rule of thumb for lever guns is if you see one for sale buy it, and then after you have it home then think about it. :D

.30-30 is a great deer round, .308 is more versatile. Ellwood Epps has a bunch of .30-30's. I loved my Savage 99E in .308...kind sorry I sold it.

I like the Browning BLR lever gun. .308 preferred.
Mine loved Federal round nose 150 gr. out to 150 yds.Could n't beat it....smooth cycler, easy to use and locks up like a bolt gun therefore the accuracy! Good luck

I'd be sorry also. :(

A few years back I walked away from a deal on a Savage 99E in 300 Savage, while I would also prefer the .308 version, I still regret it.

Pretty tight terrain, little clearings at 100 yds, deer hunting? - sounds like the perfect job for the original Marlin big bore...the .444 :). Then if you encounter a bear, you won't be ill equipped either...my 2 cents worth.
