.300 H&h

Just close your eyes and keep adding zero's on the check.;):D

Yup, and then there is my cut too, for helping him find it in the first place, and then helping him sell it too. LOL:p

For a long time I wanted a 300H&H, the only thing that stopped me was the short mag in the standard 98 action. Never found a magnum length one. If I did, I'd build it up similar to a Rigby or Purdey, except for the big drop at the heel. German style cheekpiece, ridgid rear sight with one flip up and 25" pipe, barrel band sling loop, rounded grip instead of a cap.........oh crap now look what you've got me doing again!:(

You never really found it for me, I knew who owned it. I just never thought he would sell it .

The only fee you will get from me is getting the bang stick I want from your BIL, then we can talk :D

300 ouch and ouch was the s**t when it first appeared and is great for exactly what you want to use it on.
The cartridge still has its fans today.

It has been squeezed out my marketing to make room for all the other 300s that are only slightly higher velocity, but often more recoil, and it is great for exactly what you want to use it onX2

I am cummmmmmmmmmming!!!!! :jerkit:

So here is what I decided, first off I won't be spending oodels om $ on guns every year since I should start at looking into investing money too rather than spending all the time.
At the end of this year I will buy a montana Barreld action. (Blued)
One more year and I will look at a Stock maybe two years since I would like to get a fancy wallnut stock.
A year later I will start having all the gunsmithing done and in the fouth year engraving.
The budget? around $3000! When this gun is done I would like to start in the same way on a matching smaller caliber. That's what rocks my boat

Nice round. About 9 years ago I picked up a pre-64 Winchester rifle in .300 H&H. It was advertised in a local paper as a .300. The seller didn't know anything about it when I called so I dropped by to have a look. It had never had a scope mounted on it and it came with a box and a half of old yellow & red box Western 150 grain shells. The seller said his father had bought the two boxes with the rifle when he bought it so it had not seen much use!!

I scoped it with a classic 6X Leopold and it has been a really nice shooter. Recoil is ok and the 26" barrel provides some great velocities. The barrel contour feels quite light, almost like a swamped english barrel. It actually feels better than a standard pre-64 .30-06 I used to have. I use this rifle and a custom FN '98 6.5X55 for most of my big game hunting, except for when I use various lever actions.

It has been stated that the newer .300 WSM has almost the same capacity and would make for a very sensible and accurate rifle however I understand the lure of the H&H round. I bought 100 brass from Ellwood Epps a few years ago so you may try there. I can also recommend the Montana barrels. I had Corlanes install a stainless one on my 6.5X55 and it has performed very very well.

If you take your time you might locate a great rifle for sale. You should be able to pick up a pre-64 model 70 for much less than the $3000.00 you expect to spend but again that is a personal choice. A 7mm STW model 70 rifle would also be a good candidate to rebarrel as it is already set up for the long cartridge length. You could just rebarrel and use the factory LT stock until you get a custom made up.

I couldn't be happier with my Super .30!

Regards,

Outdoors

This one could be for sale for the right price ;). The barrel only has 55 rounds through it.

I also have a lifetime supply of new 300H&H brass...

Do tell...what would the right price be? I may need to join the 300 club...

I've also had some serious thoughts about the .300H&H. It'll shoot as flat as my 270 while hitting harder and being much cooler than other .300s

I've got a Remington 721 in 300 H&H that I bought thinking I might make it into my "go to" big game rifle. It has the original butt ugly stock on it, so I bought an A grade fancy stock from Richardson Microfit for it. Never had time to fit it. Brass looked like it might get scarce so I bought 50 or 100 new cases from Wholesale Sports (have to dig them out to check) and found a few more boxes of WW unfired brass I came across. Never used them as the gun came with some brass. Dies too. Replaced the 3x Redfield with a 4-12 Weaver. This was quite a few years ago and I never got around to do, or have anything done with it. My tastes have changed abit. I recently bought a J.P. Sauer 8x57 "Oberndorf mauser" with a full rib made in 1912 which I like alot (also very high cool factor) so I may never get to it. This thread has got me thinking about it again though. I guess I should either get her done or sell it.

PICS! PICS!

I love my 300h&h, the performance is all I will ever need... sure there are better cartridges out there.. but I just dont like to be the 10th guy at hunt camp with a 300winmag, or a 7mm rem mag

mine is a model 70 xtr

I won't hijack this thread, tkv000. I'll start a new thread with pictures titled "J.P. Sauer, Oberndorf Mauser" in this forum. You may have seen the pictures on the Nitro Express website where I first saw pictures of your beautiful custom mauser.
