Powder situation

I've never seen it this bad since I've been reloading. That said: I can still find substitutes whenever I'm out and about. Still running 4895, BL-C(2), and 4831.
 
Like powder. bullets are slowly starting to show up on dealers shelves. Prices are up, but what is with Sierra bullets looks like they have switched from copper to gold. All I can say is "Holy Cow".
 
Higginson's has a reasonable selction at the moment, all depends on if they have what you need and how much you are willing to buy, some are 8lbs only, some are 1lbs. Have to be versatile with powders, and bullets. I have likely 5 different hunting bullets I can use in my 7-08, just working on another couple or 3 powders to use in it, already have 2, but may get improvements out of newer ones, same with a 6.5CM, I have about 5 hunting bullets, 8 or 9 range bullets, 4 or 5 powders on hand for it. Have 1/2doz bullets and powders ea for 7RM, 300H&H, 218Bee and 223, plus moulds and powders for cast bullets. Always check what powders are needed for any cartridge I buy, and over the years, have acquired a decent selection. Part of that is knowing what powders will work in those cartridges and grabbing when available, and checking newer powders for newer data on a regular basis. I don't care what the brand is, just as long as it is versatile and will work with the groups of cartridges and bullets I have.
 
The extreme recent price increase has made powder sit on the shelves a little longer than usual, but those who need it and hoard it still buy it.

The best advice is to buy what’s in stock and you can afford, it ain’t getting cheaper. It’s not a cheap hobby to get into these days, thankfully most of us here have been stashing since powder was $25-$30 a pound.

Buying up all 8lb kegs over the years as I see them has certainly paid off, though I’m always on the hunt for more. Though at $700+ per keg now I am a lot more selective.
 
It's quite interesting to see the price differences between retailers. I can get most powder locally for $55-$60 a pound. Not varget or h1000, but usable powders. Then some places have new stuff coming in at $65. Then retailers charging $80-120. You can clearly find who is gouging

I guess there are those who try and profiteer in these times of haphazard availlability.
On the other hand, my small LGS in small town interior BC isn't even trying to order powder and primers because he can't get anywhere near reasonable shipping rates from the wholesalers. He can drive a 6hour round trip to a UPS depot and pick up a pallet..... that is his cheapest freight option for dangerous goods such as powder and primers. Ammo comes from a different wholesaler and the sales rep delivers it along with other regular product. But the primers and powders? Rather than be one of those guys who has to add extra mark up to the current 48.99 to 62.00 retail for various powders he is biding his time and not restocking or he will lose his shirt trying to keep reloaders happy.
This is the reality at any LGS or sporting good store that is out of the usual and allowed couriers service areas.
Canpar shutting gun owners out has really screwed the shooters and hunters in this little town of ours.
 
Was looking at powder this am, Bullseye had Varget, H4350 and ImR 7828 and H1000 @ 65.00/lb, think they still do 200.00 min for free frt. Higginson showed pricing @ 61.00, but no stock, and you pay frt. So, if Bullseye still does the 200.00 free frt on powder, it's an OK deal.
