SKS-D weighing my options for a stock choice

I bought a SKS-D recently but it is in a stock I don't like. Dragunov plastic stock. Here are my questions:

1. Which aftermarket stocks fit?

2. What kind of work is needed in order to fit the barreled receiver into a standard Chinese wood stock? pictures would help.

I have been mulling over this very thing.
The D stocks have a steel cross bar that mates with the barrel band. That barrel band on the fixed mag models has a feature on it that the fixed mag engages with.
So long and short..... you almost need a D model stock for proper fit.
I had a fancy plastic stock on a D model and got rid of the stock as there was no way to properly fit the rifle to that stock because it was missing the cross bar that engages the barrel band.
Years back I used the Butler Creek folding stock and that stock fit pretty darn good for what it was, as did the monte carlo version. I had troubles with the dragunov model though.
The choate stocks I think.... have a plastic feature behind the receiver to stop the aft movement the D has in virtually all other plastic stocks. Short of modifying the stock to add a steel cross bar in the precise location it needs to be would be difficult and messy for most hobbyists.
I am almost done making my own stock from scratch..... only way I could see having things just the way I want.
 
Or you could put it in a Russian SKS stock .
Not that hard to do

The cross bolt is in the correct spot for the D?
might have to get me a russian stock and play with that hehehe

Just had to open up the magazine area with a hand file & dremal for the mag to fit .
Also swapped the bayonet for a Russian blade type

Mine does not have a bayonet from the factory, nothing cut off, some came like this. Yes, it says SKS-D on the receiver.

I borrowed an old Chinese stock today for testing and it does not look that bad. Have to take some material off where the receiver drops in, maybe one mm, it doesn't go in deep enough to put the trigger pin in. Probably also material in the magazine area.

I like the fab defense stock, but for now I am looking at cheaper options. Plus, I am not sure if it comes for the D model since it has it's own mag release.

Update here:

I tried 3 different obsolete Chinese SKS stocks from a friend - and guess what? One fits perfectly, without cross bolt, super tight. It is painted in some kind of reddish brown like the fiberglass stocks, looks awesome. Now I only have to do some dremel work to make the magazines fit.

45ACPKING, I think you just have to try different stocks, that's all. The other 2 didn't fit at all.

thanx for the info.
In reality, I was a composite stock maker for a time and had a business account here as well.
So it's pretty easy for me just to make a stock from existing materials in my shop.
I have wood stocked D models and used one of those stocks to get my internal dimensions correct.
The rifle in question came in a fiberforce stock and had 3/4 inches of fore and aft movement of the action in the stock..... not safe to fire LOL

Yes. It also has a nice brass deflector. The bolt carrier has no cut out for stripper clips. Sorry about that old couch.

I have seen that type of bayo section on sksboard but it was for a SKS-M.

You can see in the picture that the existing cross bolt holds it nicely together.

thanks for the pic. when buying a genuine sks-d , you havta be careful cos now they are selling for over a grand so there are alot of homemade jobs (especially in the US) that dont work well.

what i watch out for are the mag catch and the wood stock that isnt cut for duckbill mag, then comes the carrier with no feeding clip cut and the bayo stem isnt ground down (yours isnt) so yours is real, congrats.

Thank you Curtton. I knew that I had to replace the stock but I paid nowhere near what it is worth. I will just file out the mag area and maybe one day I can get a cheap original stock, if not it is fine too.
 
To everybody doing this, I highly recommend filling the void area in front of the magazine. It makes it much easier to change the magazines, especially since the D does not have a bolt open function. I made a block of wood today and magazine changes are easy now, the 10 rounders are a bit hard since you almost have nothing to hold onto since the magazines are sitting so deep in the mag well. No problems at all with the 30 rounders I have.

the SKS-D is drop in for the Butler Creek stocks. I have used all their stocks back in the day and the side folder was my favorite. If I remember correctly it was grooved under the forstock for the blade bayonet.
 
I’m a little curious but how much do sks d stocks sell for now? Cuz I ended up putting my sks d in a tapco stock since mine came with a spike bayo, fit absolutely snug minus the void that everyone’s mentioned for the mag. I’m just trying to gauge it but I got 1 sks d stock with all the metal bits just no top cover bit but it’s been painted black by previous owner and another wood one with the top but no metal bits what’s the market for em since many people seem to move away from them to aftermarket stocks on any kind it seems?

There are different versions of SKS-D stocks and mag well inserts. The insert is the only thing which makes this stock interesting. I looked at some of the inserts on the Internet and found the ones which are just a square at the front not very logical. I think most of the ones here in Canada are like that.

This is the one which makes the most sense to me since it feeds the magazine.

That's exactly what I did with the wood block I made for the void area (feeding ramp). Still have to stain and epoxy it to make it strong. To insert the magazine fast and correct, it has to be at an angle, the straight metal insert will not allow for this. I believe they made special magazines for the SKS-D in order to compensate for this, which makes no sense to me at all.

For now I also epoxied (clear epoxy from the dollar store) the area within the mag well to a point which makes it very easy to insert the magazine.

To answer your question. I would be interested in an original thumbhole stock, some of them look fantastic. But I also think they would be beyond my budget.
